AM-Uncaster Fanning, Saturday, August 20, 1988 Jersey Parish Show Honors Go To Normandell Farm BY BARBARA MILLER Lycoming Co. Correspondent WHITNEYVILLE (Tioga) A diminutive 11 year old walked away with the grand champion tro phy at the state’s largest Jersey regional show held at Whitney ville on August 10, while her family captured the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor awards. At the third annual District IV Jersey Parish Show, Cathleen Nor man, daughter of Ernest and Dor othy Norman of Normandell Farms, Liberty, won the grand champion award by showing her first 4-H project, a senior two year-old named Normandell Spe ciality Sharon. Homebred by Cath leen’s sister, Carolyn, Sharon’s sire is Spring Run Speciality and her dam is Normandell Abe Shel ly. Registered for the show were 132 Jerseys. Normandell Farms, owned by Ernest and David Norman, Liber ty, captured the premier breeder and premier exhibitor trophies which they won on other occasions of the show’s three year history. Shy Cathleen, whose only remark upon winning was, “I’m happy, I guess,” has been showing dairy animals for three years as a member of the Country Farmers 4-H Dairy Club. According to Calhlcen’s father, Ernest, Sharon placed third in state competition as a senior calf two years ago and won the reserve grand award at the open dairy show at Tioga Fair this year. She is currently producing 55 pounds of milk per day. He added that a sister of Sharon’s, who placed first in the senior yearling class in the show this year, Normandell Duncan Sabrina, may have even more potential than Sharon. Presently milking 60 head of their 130 Jerseys, the Norman fam ily farms 200 acres of their 500-acre spread and uses much of the remaining acreage for pasture. The reserve grand champion trophy went to Silas and Denise Kneller, Troy, for their entry, SHS St. James Merry Dasher, a senior two year old. Dasher is out of SHS MMC St. James and her dam is SHS SS Merry Dancer. According to Denise, Dasher, who won the reserve grand champ ion award at the Troy Fair this year and the reserve junior champion award the year before, comes from a line of champions. Dasher’s sis ter and mother have previously won grand championships at the Troy Fair and her granddam in Chester County has taken quite a few championships as well. No novices to the showring, the Knellers have been showing cattle and accumulating ribbons and tro phies for a number of years. Most recently they swept the Jersey competition at the Troy Fair by winning the grand and reserve grand awards as well as the pre mier breeder and premier exhibitor banners. The Knellers farm 320 acres and milk about 40 Holsteins and 27 Jerseys. An avid Jersey fan noted for her active participation in sev eral Jersey organizations, Denise hopes to eventually change the .ratio of their herd to two thirds Jerseys and one third Holsteins. The Junior Champion and Reserve Junior Champion awards were secured by sisters, Jackie and Michele Sparling, Mansfjeld, respectively. Jackie’s senior palf, Silver-B Glorious Gal -of AHR, took the judge’s eye over Michele’s summer yearling, Silver-B Lucky Sam of AHF. Out of the same sire, Valley Stream Silver Beacon, the entries are of the same line on the dam’s side, according to Jackie. “The grand dam to my calf is the dam to the reserve junior champion,” she remarked. That same progenitor, she said, won first place as a three year-old at the 1985 farm show. Concerning her win, Jackie, vot ed a 1986 Keystone Farmer, states, “I’m proud of her. I bred her. Her dam is the first Jersey I’veowned.” The girls are the daughters of Howard and Anne Lee Sparling, Mansfield, and are members of the Mansfield Chapter of FFA. They have been showing catde for a number of years. Twenty-year-old Jackie cur rently owns 19 registered Hols teins, two registered Jerseys, and one registered Brown Swiss. “I’m thinking of starting my own farm,” she explains. Sister, Michele, says she has taken the reserve junior champion ship before in the Whitneyville show and also lists an entry at Har risburg that copped a reserve grand trophy. She has also won a grand in FFA competition. Michele owns 11 cows, all Jerseys, she says, with the excep tion of one Holstein. According to Denise Kneller, show chairwoman, the third annu al District IV Jersey Parish Show was dedicated to the memory of recently deceased Tommy G. Noble “who was the first chairman of the District Show and encour aged and started many a 4-H youth on the road to Jersey breeding.” Dairy princesses helping with the event were: Bradford County Dairy Princess, Terri Packard; Tioga County Dairy Princess, Tery Kizer; and Tioga County Alter nate, Bridget Callahan. Judge for the show was Jim McCaffery of Delta, Pa. District IV Jersey Parish Show Results Junior Call 1. Richard L. & Karen E Tickner; 2. Ron & Hilga Moore; 3. Ken Charles Barker.
