August 6, 191 Schuylkill County F Grace Karrcr, Schuylkill Coun ty Fair public relations director, announced today that the fair will officially open at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9. “We’re bigger and better: more exhibits, more entertainment, more fun and new fairgrounds.” The Scuylkill County Fair will run through Saturday, August 13. Opening ceremonies wil be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday preceded by the crowning of the 1988 fair queen and princess at 6:00 p.m. and the auctioning off of the 1988 blue ribbon cakes at 6:45 p.m. Fol lowing opening ceremonies, enter tainment will be provided by the Pale Rider Band. The fair opens at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday to the public and continues every day until 11:00 p.m. through Saturday. “Admission is free,” Karrcr staled. “We want to keep the fair a family-oriented affair. There is a parking donation, but you can load up the whole family and your friends and neighbors. You can’t beat that deal.” Lancaster County Activities, exhibits, and special events all highlight the Lancaster County 4-H Fair set for August 10 to 12. To be held at the Manheim Farm Show Complex daily from noon to 10 p.m., the Fair offers something for everyone who com es to be part of the festivities. A 4-H project show, Showman of showman contest, volleyball tournament, omelet contest, archery shoot, air rifle and pistol contest, food stands, and craft stands are part of the attractions. There also will be a steer show, a hog show and sale, and a Seeing Eye puppy training session. A sheep show will be held as well as a therapeutic riding exhibition. A special feature of the fair will be the benefit auction to be held Friday, August 10, starting at 5:30 p.m. Included in the auction will be a variety of items including quilts and a special painting of the restored Manheim Railroad Sta tion, which dates from 1881 and was reccndy restored by the Man heim Historical Society. The painting, done by award winning Lancaster County artist Russell Allen, was donated to the auction by the artist. This is the only benefit auction of the year which is privileged to have one of Allen’s works to be auctioned. Other special features at the auc tion will include a collection and variety of Winross trucks donated by area businesses. These, too will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Another special feature of the fair will be an exclusive visit of the pony Misty II of Chincotcague, the grand-daughter pony of the fam ous Misty of Chincotcague, of which a trio of children’s books were written by author Marguerite Henry. Misty 11, so named because she looks the most like her famous grandmother, recently came to the Lancaster County area and her owners have consented to let the pony visit the fair. Also included will be a signing for the deaf demonstration, and a chicken barbecue right on the fair grounds. Throughout the fair grounds there will be a wide varie ty of exhibits and projects, all made and entered by 4-H’ers from throughout the county. Donations are still being accepted'for the 4-H Auction.
