1988 _Farm Program Enrollment

County farmers enrolled 26,093
acres in the 1988 acreage reduction
programs for wheal and feed
grains, according to Donald E.
Lutz, chairman of the Berks Coun
ty Agricultural Stabilization and
Conservation Service. The ASCS
office also has issued compliance
figures on the 1987 acreage reduc
tion programs.
Lutz said the 1988 farm prog
ram participants contracted to
reduce their crop acreage bases by
27.5 percent for wheat, 20 percent
for com, sorghum and barley and 5
percent for oats. This means that as
much as 6,102 acres of the coun
ty’s cropland could be idled this

cipants. Lutz said the cropland
taken out of production is known
as acreage conservation reserve
(ACR), and must be devoted to
conserving uses as soon as possi
ble after the normal planting per
iod for spring crops to protect it
from wind and water erosion.
Based on the preliminary
acreage reduction report, crop base
acres enrolled in the 1988 farm
programs include 3,508 wheat
acres and 22,585 feed grain acres.
The acreage reduction programs
are designed to curtail burdensome
supplies of these crops, Lutz said.

Producers who comply with the
1988 farm program provisions will
be eligible to receive price support
loans and deficiency payments, in
addition to land diversion pay
ments for com, sorghum and
barley.
According to Lutz, approxi
mately 49 percent of the base
acreages for wheat and feed grains
were in compliance with the 1987
acreage reduction program provi
sions. The 1987 base acres of
county crops included 8,666 wheat
acres and 47,767 feed grain acres.
A total of 5,667 acres were taken
out of production and devoted to
conservation uses.

Gray is wanted by the Pennsyl
vania State Police in MeadviUe,
Crawford County for delivery of a
controlled substance. Gray is
accused of selling one quarter
pound of marijuana to an under
cover officer during an ongoing
investigation of illegal drug activi
ty in northwestern Pennsylvania.
Gray was arrested, pled guilty to
the charge and was to be sentenced
on October 25, 1985. He failed to
appear for sentencing and has not
been seen since. Gray has two
prior convictions of illegal drug
manufacture and sale for which he
did spend time in prison.
Gray is described as a black
male, age 31, with short black hair
and brown eyes. He is 6 feet 3
inches tall and weighs 198 pounds.
Gray is known to travel extensive
ly and has contacts in eastern
Pennsylvania. He is well educated
and has a good working know
ledge of chemistry. He also pos
sesses carpentry skills. Gray may
seek employment in either profes
sion. His last known address is
