C4-Lancastef Farming, Saturday, May 14, 1988 PITTSBURGH (Allegheny) Osteoporosis affects 24 million Americans a year. It is a silent dis order that may only be diagnosed after a serious bone fracture. May 8-14 has been designated as National Osteoporosis Prevention Week in an effort to concentrate the public’s interest on prevention and early diagnosis. This disorder, characterized by serious loss of bone tissue, is asso ciated with 1.3 million fractures annually. Judy Dodd, a registered dietitian with the Dairy & Nutri tion Council, points out that it is estimated that this disorder costs Americans about $lO billion each year. This includes the medical care as well as the social and eco nomic loss that is a result of frac tures attributed to osteoporosis. The most commonly affected areas are the spine, hip and wrist Over 247,000 hip fractures each year are attributed to this bone-thinning disorder. Increased emphasis is being placed on prevention since effec tive methods of treatment are not widely available. People are living longer thus increasing the number of persons at risk. Both males and females are affected but Caucasian and oriental older women are more likely to be affected. Women who are small boned, thin or who experienced early menopause are especially susceptible. Smoking and excessive intake of alcohol also raises a person’s chances of developing osteoporosis. Prevention centers on building a stronger bone mass as a protection against osteoporosis in later years. The peak periods for building bone mass are in childhood through the twenties. At all ages a healthy lifestyle, including a nutritionally balanced diet and adequate exer cise, is important. Food choices should be balanced including adequate calcium, the bone building mineral. Medical experts agree that osteoporosis does not have to be an inevitable part of growing old.
