WASHINGTON The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved field tests for tomato plants genetically engineered to tolerate sulfonylurea herbicides. E. I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co., Inc., Wilmington, Del., deve lopers of the tomato, will begin testing this spring at a site near Bradenton, Fla. Larry S. Slagle, acting associate administrator of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Ser vice, said these trials will clarify the usefulness of the new variety. “If trials show the plants tolerate this new low-risk class of herbi cides, commercial tomato produc ers will have available a valuable new method of controlling weeds without damaging their crops,” he said. •;mmiM • ; ■ ' ; ■ • - ••*••*• —■— - - .ast. Such tests are con ducted for all new plant varieties, whether they are genetically engi neered or developed through con ventional breeding, said Slagle. mini 111 iiili ww**"***— ""''«" """ iiu*i iirti^r' —“ h - MM*&I&WMTW CONFINEMENT SYSTEMS INC. 608 E.
