The U.S. Department of Agriculture is declaring Virginia and Washing ton as the 3Sth and 36th states designated free of bovine tuberculosis. According to Donald L. Hous ton, administrator ofUSDA's Ani mal and Plant Health Inspection Service, tuberculosis-free recogni tion is based on a state’s freedom from the disease for a specified time and on its compliance with the uniform methods and rules of the state-federal cooperative tuber culosis eradication program. Cattle and bison from Virginia and Washington can now be mark eted more easily, since many pros pective buyers prefer to buy from states designated free of the disease. Incidence of the disease nation wide has been reduced dramatical ly since its peak earlier in this cen tury, but outbreaks of bovine tuberculosis have been detected even in accredited-free states, Houston said. He warned against complacency about bovine TB. ‘Tuberculosis will continue to be a threat to dairy and beef cattle until the last infection has been elimi nated,” he said. Bovine TB is a serious, infec tious disease that results in weight loss, general debilitation, and sometimes death in infected ani mals. It affects bison and cattle similarly. 841 76( 3.3 3.7 3.4 3.9 to >0 '22 7; Free
