The Soil Conservationist When Larry Parvin pulls up at a farm in Blair County and gets out of the car with a suitcase, the far mer can relax. Parvin’s nol'coniing to stay. He is just bringing the lat est in soil conservation technical assistance to the farm. Larry Parvln, soil conservationist (L) and John Spitzes SCS agronomist work with new suitcase computer. 6 You can’t buy abetter planter box treatment for com. It’s all of the insect protection you’ve come to expect from Diazinon and Lindane, plus the powerful systemic disease protection of Vitavax.® Most commercial com seed comes treated with Captan, but this only protects your com against seed borne disease. Because Vitavax is a true systemic, it actually penetrates the seed and then translocates in the seedling to give you several weeks of control against Rhizoctonia, Fusarium plus other seed and seedling diseases. Add all of that to the powerful seed com maggot, seed com beetle and wireworm protection you get from the Diazinon and Lindane, and you can see why we say “You can’t buy a better planter box treatment for com.” Germate Plus. Parvin has equipped a standard two-suiter with a portable compu ter terminal, a disk drive, a printer, and an acoustical coupler. The computer can operate alone at the farm or by using the farmer’s phone, it can be hooked up to the larger computer in the SCS office. Out on the farm, it can be powered by rechargeable batteries, a car cigarette lighter or a standard household or bam electric outlet ‘This system allows me to take my office files with me to any farm,” says Parvin. “The farmer and I can develop a conservation plan and the farmer can have his copy before I leave the farm. This saves the farmer time and it saves me time. I am averaging 4 to 5 hours per planning unit as com pared to 7 to 10 hours before.” Parvin admits that the computer is not standard SCS equipment but something that he developed. He points out that the computer is an easily obtained, relatively inex pensive 24K portable computer. Parvin has upgraded his-computer to 96K storage. According to Parvin, the port- Lincaster Farming Saturday, November 14, 1987-Dl9 able computer is particularly valu able for developing contracts with farmers for an accelerated land treatment project in the Clover Creek Watershed.
