A34-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 26, 1987 First Jr. Dairyman Contest Posts Winners HARRISBURG Recogniz ing that our youth are the future of the dairy industry, show manage ment added a new activity for young competitors to this year’s 24th Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Show. The first annual Junior Dairyman Contest, held Tuesday at the Farm Show Com plex, was established as an educa tional activity for 4-H and FFA members from across the country. The Conrad Weiser FFA from BERKS COUNTY captured first place in the overall FFA team com petition, scoring 902 points and earning $5O and a trophy for their efforts. Team members included the newly crowned Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Becky *Sonnen from Richland, Chris Blatt, Dave Wolfskill and Kay Fessler, all from Robesonia. The Milksquirts 4-H Club from SOMERSET COUNTY scored 827 points to win the overall 4-H team competition, earning $5O and a trophy. Team members included Jennifer Brown of Garrett, Jennif er Welch, Matthew Welch and Thad Will, all from Berlin. The Udder Half 4-H from New York finished second with 809 points and the CRAWFORD COUNTY 4-H Club placed third with 765 points. Julie Walbert from the Howard County 4-H Club in Maryland was the highest scorer in the overall individual competition, earning $lOO. Tom McCauley from Eli zabethtown, LANCASTER COUNTY, placed second; Karen Fessler from the Conrad Weiser FFA, BERKS COUNTY, placed Thanks and Congratulations This New Srmebbo? Individual state awards were also presented to the high scorers in each of the three categories. Tom McCauley was Pennsylvani a’s high individual overall, Conrad Weiser was the high scoring team in the Pennsylvania FFA division and the Milksquirts captured first place in Pennsylvania’s 4-H divi sion. State awards also went to contestants from Maine, Indiana, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. Competitors were quizzed on knowledge of ten classes covering dairy judging of cows and heifers, meats identification, feed identifi cation, forage identification and evaluation, milking systems, dairy products, dairy marketing, dairy management and pedigree evalua to McAllisterville, PA tion. Contestants were then inter viewed by a panel of judges and could score extra points for their understanding and knowledge of the questions, ability to respond orally to questions and express their thoughts clearly, and the accuracy of their answers.
