It was just the latest in a senes of unusual, cat-astrophies which had led to a near-shortage of farm felines. Such a shortage is unpre cedented in recent farm history. Naturally, the half-dozen tod dler kittens were rescued from orphanhood and installed in one of the calf condo pens in the nursery area. And, because they had lost their mother long before she had raised them to food-catching stage, they couldn’t simply be left to fend for filling their own hungry little tummies. Of course not. In the meantime, the house cat had delivered her own litter of seven. Initially installed in a big box in the basement, they soon outgrew that haven and Figured out how to claw their way up the stairs to the living room. This was acceptable for about a week or two, until kitten curiosity and courage sent them on expedi tions which inevitably ended on one of the porches. Before too many more weeks had passed, the entire batch had claimed squatter rights to the basement porch, where our frequent bam comings and goings offered them adequate attention. Besides, every time you opened a door, they were all tumbling after your feet and their mama was whining for a handout. But, I’m a pushover for soft, cuddy, shining eyed kittens that climb into my arms, snuggle up, and start to purr in obvious contentment. But what we really need are bam cats. After all, with cool weather impending, ‘tis the season for the influx of farmstead rodents inside hunting snug winter quarters. But without a mother to instruct them, how would the batch of calf bam kittens figure out what they were supposed to do with those rat tailed beasts. Someone will have to leach them. Right. And, you know who. Or, is that whom? No one here cared, so long as the kittens got the idea. Enter a tiny mouse, discovered as I swept the feed alley in the heif er pens. Woods Drive Lititz, PA 17543 717-626-1151 would be a piece of cake. Theoreti cally, the kittens would figure it tasted that good, too. After the mini-rodent escaped my clutches twice and disappeared into the stone foundation, I philo sophized that if the Almighty had intended me to snag mice, I’d at least have fingernails of credible length. Besides, the kittens had taken one sniff of a rat killed in one of the buildings, turned up dainty noses and got that pleading “feed us!” look on their furry little faces. Out went another offering of catfood. About this same time, the eldest decided that it was time to begin the transformation of porch cats to bam cats. Their timid mother, ter rified of even the sounds of bawl ing cattle, freaked out, so to speak. Squalling, calling and pacing the yard, she eventually begged a cou ple of the kittens back through the yard to the porch. The rest look various cover. And mother cat whined for a reunion. By morning, porch kittens were all back at the usual spot - curled together in a plant flat - waiting for breakfast. The barn kittens tumbled underfoot as I fed calves until they, 100, got chow. The bag of catfood is rapidly diminishing. We’re clipping cat food coupons like crazy. Our 13 kittens have buttcrball bellies, while the mice are laughing all the way to the feed bin. You know, what we really need are some bam cats. REPLACEMENT CHAIN & PARTS FOR ALMOST ALL MAKES OF CLEANERS foil fo hr An Estimate 24 Mrs. - 7 Days A Week - Refrigeration Service km mmm
