AiB-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September M, 1987 Savage-Leigh Maryland’s Outstanding Senior Breeder The Savage-Leigh prefix has been in existence since 1945 when three brothers, Leroy, Melvin and Kenneth Savage purchased the first purebreds from the Naval Academy herd. Over the next 15 years many purebred young females were imported from Cana da. In the early 1960’s the brothers became a member of the Astronaut syndicate and the bull was used extensively since then until the present, in the herd. The Astronaut bull crossed well on the herd with this strong Canadian influence. The herd consists of over 450 purebred Holsteins with a milking herd of around 200. Their 1986 herd average is 19,490 pounds of milk, 724 pounds of fat. Then May 1987 classification shows a BAA of 103%. The herd is known and respected for its type which includes three grand champions at the Maryland State Fair and two at the Maryland State Holstein Show. Savage- Leigh bred cattle have been grand at regional and national shows as well, including the New York State Fair, Eastern States and Western National.
