814-Urfcasffr tfrrhlHg, SHhiftfay, Alijgbli I’S/Wfit Reluctant Contestant Now Enthusias by Sally Bair Lancaster Co. Correspondent LINCOLN Teresa Martin, 20, may have been a reluctant con testant, but she is now an enthu siastic queen. Pretty and soft spo ken, Teresa was named the Lan caster County Poultry Queen last week, and, as the county winner, also wears the crown of Pennsyl vania Poultry Queen. The daughter of Darrell and Earla Martin, Lin coln, Teresa will be a junior at Messiah College at Grantham. It was Darrell who brought home the entry forms from his work at Victor F. Weave* in New Holland, and encouraged both Teresa and her 18-year-old sister Cheryl to enter the county contest He was joined by other family members and Teresa’s boy friend, and eventually Teresa caved in and entered. Now she’s glad she did. Cheryl chose not to enter. “I found out it is more of a worthwhile thing. If it had been strictly a beauty contest, I never would have entered,” Teresa says. Indeed, the role she is least looking forward to is riding floats in the county fair parades. The part she is most eager to undertake is “talking with people and getting to meet people.” She is eager to tell of the benefits of using poultry products, saying, “Eggs are the best source of animal pro tein, and are economical and nutri tional. They are also easy to pre pare.” She thinks promoting eggs will be easy, because, “I like them.” Teresa is looking forward to learning more about chicken, and points out that Lancaster County remains number one in processed poultry products. A junior at Messiah College in Grantham, Teresa is majoring in elementary education and is look ing forward to making elementary school presentations. She says, “I’ll make time for it. This is my major interest and it will give me some experience in the classroom. It will definitely help my career goals.” Her interest in elementary —.igappi , .gg <g~ will keep Teresa’s upcoming year full of excitement. The telephone and appointment book will become constant companions. showing the many delicious ways In which they can be used. Here Teresa is ready to serve some freshly baked cookies to a guest. education evolved after many summers spent as a camp counselor. Teresa feels she has a pretty good grounding in promoting eggs because she is working for R.W. Sauder, Inc., Lititz, for the second summer. Glenn Sauder, who hired ~ Queen her for the job, provided her with informational brochures about eggs to help her with the necessary background before entering the contest She admits candidly that she did not want to work there at first, because she wanted to have a job where she could “dress up.” Now she’s glad she accepted, because being poultry queen will give her ample opportunity to “dress up” and to “meet new people.” She recalls that she first met Sauder when she was solo canoe ing down Pine Creek, through the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Sauder was also canoeing, and he liked Teresa’s ability to handle a canoe and her adventuresome spir it and asked her to work in his pro cessing plant for the summer. Having mastered several diffe rent jobs in the plant, Teresa takes the place of people who have gone on vacations. As such, she also works a variety of shifts. She says, “Candling is the hardest job, and took the longest to learn.” Teresa acknowledges that most of the workers at the plant were very enthusiastic about her becom ing Poultry Queen. Her boss, Glenn Sauder, was “pretty thrilled about it, and her father “was bust ing from the seams,” Teresa said. For her promotional presenta tion during the contest, Teresa dressed up as an Easter Bunny and gave a newscast about different ways to use eggs. One of her more unique reports was an egg toss at the Olympic games.
