A22-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 15, 1987 PA All-American Opens Sept. 21 In Harrisburg "Dairy Distinction" best describes the 24th Pennsylvania All-American Pairy Show sche duled for September 21-23 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. The strength and vitality of the dairy industry is supported through competition and activities at the Industrial Uses For Com MINNEAPOLIS If you had bought a new Plymouth car in 1937, and CMA had been used as a deicer on all the roads during the succeeding SO years, your car would only now be starting to show signs of rust, the crowd at the recent 1987 National Com Grow ers Association Com Classic in Minneapolis was told. Dr. Lawrence Hudson, senior project manager. New York State Energy research and Development Authority, told com growers how corn-based CMA and other new products made from com grain and com stover are emerging through the efforts of several research programs. Among the most promising are biodegradable plastics, calcium magnesium acetate (CMA), petro chemicals from sugars, sugars from cellulose (cobs, husks and stalks), lignin chemistry, and com cob-derived ignition improver for alcohol-diesel engines. Hudson pointed out CMA is effective, non-corrosive and envir onmentally safe. The major draw back at this time is cost, but new estimates show even that problem could be overcome. All-American. Exhibitors from 26 states and Canada will vie for over $84,000 in premiums and blue rib bons in six dairy divisions. The caliber of competition is indicated by the fact that three national shows are scheduled for this year. Open and junior divi sions will be held in the National Show Great Promise Currently, small-scale CMA production from commercial ace tic acid and dolomitic lime costs 40 cents per pound. According to the SRI report, large-scale production would drop the cost to 27 cents per pound. Large-scale production from com syrup fermentation and same-vessel reaction with dolomi tic lime (with com at $2.40/bu.) would put the price at 19 cents per pound. The price would drop even further, according to SRI, with large-scale production from com using halophiles, 14 cents per pound, or from com stover using halophiles, to 13 cents per pound. Hudson pointed out that at a cost of 13 cents per pound, com-based CMA would be cost efficient for use by cities and states without raising taxes. This also takes into account the savings in time and expense for road and bridge repairs and maintenance which would have occurred with the use of salt. If CMA was adopted on a wide basis, about 10 to 20 million tons could be used each year which would require up to 700 million bushels of com. Hudson also asked com growers if they would like to make pesti Guernsey Show, the Eastern National Brown Swiss Show and the Eastern National Holstein Show. The show’s coordinators have worked hard to bring the best of dairy industry to the PAADS. They have changed the schedule cides from their ownproduct, not ing that com stover can be pro cessed to make pesticides, phar maceuticals, adhesives, cosmetics, plastics, fabrics, ethanol for fuel blending, nylon and castings. A 10 percent ethanol-blended gasoline is available for cars, and now “every major diesel engine manufacturer is looking at ethanol to meet the new pollution stan dards by 1991,” said Hudson. He told the group that Cummins Engine Company and Daimler- Benz have operated several hundred diesel vehicles in Brazil on ethanol with ignition improver. “Com growers may benefit through new demand for com cobs as a feedstock for ignition improver,” Hudson noted. 8323 LI ‘ I 3 When Performance Makes The Difference iortteatf this year to better accommodate exhibitors and improve the judging competition for all participants. A new Junior Dairyman’s Con test will' honor individual state winners and top-placing 4-H and FFA teams who best combine their judging and management skills with knowledge of the dairy industry. Opportunities to socialize in between the competition will be offered for members of the dairy industry at the Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Coronation on September 19 and the All-American Banquet on September 21. Once again the Invitational Youth Judging Contest will offer college students the chance to match wits and dairy judging skills to earn prestige among their national peers. The Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show and the Pen nsylvania 4-H and FFA Dairy Judging Forum also offer our youth the opportunity to improve their judging and exhibiting abilities. The entry deadline for PAADS competition is August 21. A $lO late fee will be charged for entries postmarked between August 22 and September 3.
