Computers And Careers In Agriculture UNIVERSITY PARK The future of agriculture, from careers for young people to computer applications on the farm, will be highlighted in the youth building at Ag Progress Days August 18-20. Visitors can leant how to oper ate a computer and use it for a vari ety of purposes. They can also view slide and film presentations on agricultural science and careers, check out what Penn State’s College of Agriculture has to offer students, and even use a computer to help plan their own career goals. A 12-desk computer classroom will be staffed by the people who teach Penn State faculty, staff and students to use Macintosh compu ters. Visitors of all ages may attend any of the four free daily classes - at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Participants will leant the basics of using a Macintosh com puter, then will be introduced to ways the computer can be put to use in agriculture. Also in the youth building, visi tors can use computers linked with the statewide computer network PENpages to look up information on everything from family nutri uon, to no-till farming, to up-to date agricultural news. Ag progress Days is held each year at the College of Agricul ture’s Rock Springs Agricultural Research Center nine miles south west of State College on Route 45. The gates are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking and admission are free. Different computers will be used to offer the Discover prog ram, used by high school and col lege students, and others contemp lating careers, to help choose career goals. Visitors are welcome to sit down and try out the program. Biotechnology, international agriculture, and careers in a variety of agriculture-related fields will be among the topics highlighted in slide and film presentations in the youth building. The films and slides will run continuously throughout Ag Progress Days. In addition, young people can check out exhibits in the building to leant what the various depart ments in Penn State’s College of Agriculture have to offer to students. Penn State students from the College of Agriculture will be on hand as ambassadors to answer questions from the public. Ag Progress Days is one of the largest outdoor showcases of uni versity programs and agricultural technology in the East.
