CIO-Lancaster- rWraint, Saturday, August 1, -1987 Mercner To Head Friends Of 4-H Board DOWNINGTOWN Carol Mercner, marketing manager of Southeast Farm Credit Service, West Chester, was elected chair man of the board of Pennsylvania Friends of 4-H for 1987-88 during the board’s recent meeting in Chambersburg. As chairman of Pennsylvania Friends of 4-H, Mercner will direct the board’s efforts to obtain private support for the 4-H program across Pennsylvania. Over the past seven years the organization has helped raise more than a half million dol lars for the statewide 4-H program in which more than a quarter of a million youngsters from ages 8 to 19 have participated. “My top priority, my major focus, will be raising’money, not only for this fiscal year, which is certainly our immediate concern, but with an eye to the future,” Mercner says. The major fundrais ing effort will be directed toward corporations, which board mem bers will personally contact to soli cit funds. But Mercner is full of other, innovative fundraising ideas. “We have new and different ideas new and different approaches,” she say's. One of those new ideas is the 4-H Touchdown Club. Mem bers of the club will pledge money to Friends of 4-H in $5 increments for every touchdown the Penn State University football team makes in the coming season. A second challenge, Mercner says, is to use the money the board raises to provide programs that will keep youths interested. “In ■g jge. .heast Farm Credit, will head the board of the Friends of 4-H for the coming year. Areas 215-367-6259 if ho answer order to keep the kids interested, the projects must be for today,” she says. The 1987 fiscal budget, set for approval in September, will in clude funds to revise one 4-H project. Mercner expects the board to set aside $ll,OOO per year over a four-year period to fund the revi sion. The program, which has not yet been selected, will be wide reaching project that reaches a large audience, she explained. The board will survey 4-H agents across the state to learn which pro ject they believe is most in need of updating. Mercner also believes the board should raise money to create new and projects to hold the interest of teens. “The longer 4-H’ers stay in the program, the more opportunity they have to develop and benefit from it.” Still another of Mercner’s goals is to promote 4-H to several audi ences, including potential 4-H leaders, prospective 4-H’ers and their families, and prospective contributors. The new budget will probably earmark $15,000 toward developing a video that will meet this need, she said. “A final challenge,” Mercner says, “is to give more people an opportunity to work for and with the 4-H cause and the young peo ple of Pennsylvania. The board will be considering reorganizing with a regional focus in order to meet this challenge.” While she was never a 4-H’er herself, Mercner is sold on the 4-H program and is convinced it has 215-369-1625 much to offer today’s young peo ple. “During my term as chairman, I hope to help more people under stand that an investment in 4-H is one of the best investments anyone —individual or corporation—can make. It’s difficult to put a dollar figure on the return from a 4-H investment, but it’s there. You’ll find it in the positive attitude, indi vidual and community pride, and spirit of cooperation from 4-H alumni you meet every day. 4-H alumni are respected and contri buting members of our society in every walk of life.” Mercner is a graduate of the Baldwin School, Bryn Mawr, attended Wheaton College in Nor ton, Mass., and is a member of the I ’ | MODEL HP CASH * I Bam zio . .. 3i .$4,595 I I w-i , V .
