Competition Heats Up At Lycoming Fair Dairy Show
BY BARBARA MILLER
Lycoming Co. Correspondent
HUGHESVILLE The sun
shone on the 117th Lycoming
County Fair held at the Hughesvil
le fairgrounds from July 16 to 25.
And it shone. And it shone. Last
year it rained all but two days of
the fair, but this year the whir of
fans could be heard from the pizza
stands to the cattle bams in an
attempt to combat the week-long
90-degree-plus heat wave.
Officials blamed the hot humid
air for a decrease in attendance but
noted a total of 90,000 people
passed through their gates this
year. Even so, there was an
increase in the number of livestock
entries, with market hogs register
ing a 33 percent increase over last
year.
This year for the first time the
Open Dairy Show was held in two
parts; the Holstein Open Show on
Wednesday, July 22, and the Col
ored Breed Dairy Show on the fol
lowing day, July 23.
Thirteen-year-old Cynthia
Showers may be the youngest
competitor to walk away with top
honors at the Lycoming County
Fair Open Show. Cynthia and her
three-year-old registered Holstein,
Tty-Oaks Astro Jewel April won
the grand championship trophy in
the Holstein Open Dairy Show.
Cynthia, who will be an eighth
grader at the Warrior Run School,
Watsontown, lives with her grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. George
Showers.
April, who had the best udder in
the show, was sired by Knob-View
Jewelmaker and is homebred. She
is currently producing IS.IOIM
with a 3.4 test, 520 pounds of fat
and 495 pounds of protein.
A member of the Bald Eagle
4-H Club, Cynthia has been show
ing Holstein cattle for five years
and is no stranger to the winner’s
circle. Showing April, Cynthia
won the grand champion trophy at
the last year’s and this year’s 4-H
Dairy Show. Since she’s been
exhibiting cattle she also accumu
lated a reserve grand award along
the way.
■ About winning, Cynthia notes,
“It’s kind of good but sometimes
people get a little mad.” Cynthia
says she won because April is a
“good animal. She’s a good type
animal. She doesn’t have many
faults,” she explains.
To win, she says, you should
have a good animal and show it to
the best of your ability, but notes,
“Even if you have an average ani
mal and show it to the best of your
ability you usually get
somewhere.”
Cynthia’s grandfather, George
Showers, who is with the Ameri
can Breeders Service, currently is
milking 21 registered Holsteins.
Reserve grand champion Hols
tein went to a cow owned by
Robert Cross, R.D. 1, Williams
port. Cross said his entry, Gar-Sher
Penn Candy, a four-year-old, aver
aged 26.000 M with a 4.1 fat test
and 1084 pounds of fat as a two
year-old. She is out of a dam that
averaged 22,000 pounds of milk
with a 4.7 test Candy was pur
chased at the New York State Bred
Heifer Sale.
Cross has a herd of 33 registered
Holsteins and entered the Lycom
ing County Fair for the first time.
He said he was surprised to have
taken second place in the show.
Ayrshire Show
In the Ayrshire division William
id Carl Sandel of Danville won
- grand championship with their
' year-old cow, Frosty-Ayr
as Try-Oaks Astro

Cross had reserve champion, Gar-Sher Penn Candy.
Ernie and Wanda Derr (second from right) took
champion and reserve honors in Jersey show.
Mandy. The Sandels, who have
shown Ayrshires for a number of
years, took both the grand and
reserve grand Ayrshire prizes last
year. Mandy’s dam, Delores
Flashy Bird won first prize last
year and Mandy took second.
The reserve grand Ayrshire tro
phy went to 15-year-old Todd Rus
sell, son of Becky Lovell, Wil
liamsport, for his four-year-old,
Penn Spring A. Precious. Showing
Precious and another entry, Todd
took the grand champion and
reserve grand champion trophies
in the 4-H Dairy Show this year.
He also was awarded top honors in
the Ayrshire division in the 4-H
competition last year.
A member of the Slate Road 4-H
Club, Todd has been showing
dairy animals for six years. Todd
purchased Precious from Ronald
Martin, Clinton County.
Jersey Show
Top honors in the Jersey breed
went to Ernie and Wanda Derr,
Muncy. Their entries. Silver Certi
ficate Linda of Twin Tower, a five
year-old, and Swingles Saint Fulti,
a three-year-old, earned the grand
and reserve grand trophies, respec
tively. Silver Certificate has a
record of 13,320 pounds of milk,
and 620 pounds of fat. She was
purchased as a 4-H project from
Barbara and Reynald Harkness,
Gillett, Pa.
According to Wanda, Silver
Certificate competed at the State
Junior Dairy Show in 1983 and
won the grand champion prize at
the Lycoming County Fair the
same year. After showing cattle for
a combined total of 20 years as 4-H
projects, the Derrs are now operat
ing Heavens Blessins Farm and
milking a herd of 37 Jerseys.

Grand and reserve grand tro

went to Rhonda Peterman, Muncy.
With her entries, Alfa Mar Fayvor

one-year-old Peterman’s Pride

year. A member of the Lairdsville
Ag 4-H Club for five years, she
was awarded the grand pn/cs in
the open and 4-H with Blossom
last year. She is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Kendal Peterman,
Muncy.
Brown Swiss Show
Winner of the grand champion
prize in the Brown Swiss division
was Lori Rene Schultz, Muncy,
with her junior heifer calf, DML
Elegant Candy. Lori is a member
of the 118 Ag 4-H Club.

the Burton Staman Sr. family of
Valley bell Farms, Montgomery,
tied with Ritter-Ridge Farms,
Muncy owned by the Hilda Ritter
family. The premier exhibitor ban
ner was awarded to the Staman
family. Both families have been
showing Holstein cattle at the fair
for a number of years with the Rit
ters winning the premier breeder
and premier exhibitor awards for
the past eight years. This is the first
time the Staman family has tied or
won the premier breeder and exhi

County Fair.

the grand championship Holstein
trophy for the second year in a row
in the 4-H Dairy Show with her
cow, Try-Oaks Astro Jewel April.
Beth Cooley, 16-year-old
daughter of Dale and Sharon Coo
ley, Allenwood, won the reserve
grand champion Holstein award in
the 4-H Dairy Show with her entry,
Bald Eagle Creek Wanda. The
four-year-old took the 4-H grand
champion trophy two years ago.
she was purchased from Franklin
Finck of Montgomery.
A member of the Bald Eagle
4-H Club, Beth has been showing
dairy cattle for the past eight years.
She says she won reserve champ
ion because there wasn’t a lot of
competition, the judge liked her
cow, and she spent two weeks
beforehand grooming Wanda to
compete.

champion and reserve Guernseys. Joy Evans (second
champion Ayrshire trophy for owners William and Carl
Sandel. Dale Lovell showed reserve champion for
owner Todd Russell.
“Keep trying, eventually every
body should win,” is Beth’s advice
to beginners.
Todd Russell, who won the
reserve grand champion trophy for
showing his Ayrshire, Precious, in
the open dairy show was also
awarded the grand and reserve
grand trophies for his entries in the
4-H Dairy Show.
According to Todd, one of the
best things about 4-H competition
is winning money. Todd tells
novices not to get discouraged. “If
you don’t win the first time, it’s no
big deal. You gotta be patient with
animals. Winning is not really
important but to have a good time
is the important thing.”
Top honors in the Jersey com
