Correspondent HUGHESVILLE The sun shone on the 117th Lycoming County Fair held at the Hughesvil le fairgrounds from July 16 to 25. And it shone. And it shone. Last year it rained all but two days of the fair, but this year the whir of fans could be heard from the pizza stands to the cattle bams in an attempt to combat the week-long 90-degree-plus heat wave. Officials blamed the hot humid air for a decrease in attendance but noted a total of 90,000 people passed through their gates this year. Even so, there was an increase in the number of livestock entries, with market hogs register ing a 33 percent increase over last year. This year for the first time the Open Dairy Show was held in two parts; the Holstein Open Show on Wednesday, July 22, and the Col ored Breed Dairy Show on the fol lowing day, July 23. Thirteen-year-old Cynthia Showers may be the youngest competitor to walk away with top honors at the Lycoming County Fair Open Show. Cynthia and her three-year-old registered Holstein, Tty-Oaks Astro Jewel April won the grand championship trophy in the Holstein Open Dairy Show. Cynthia, who will be an eighth grader at the Warrior Run School, Watsontown, lives with her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Showers. April, who had the best udder in the show, was sired by Knob-View Jewelmaker and is homebred. She is currently producing IS.IOIM with a 3.4 test, 520 pounds of fat and 495 pounds of protein. A member of the Bald Eagle 4-H Club, Cynthia has been show ing Holstein cattle for five years and is no stranger to the winner’s circle. Showing April, Cynthia won the grand champion trophy at the last year’s and this year’s 4-H Dairy Show. Since she’s been exhibiting cattle she also accumu lated a reserve grand award along the way. ■ About winning, Cynthia notes, “It’s kind of good but sometimes people get a little mad.” Cynthia says she won because April is a “good animal. She’s a good type animal. She doesn’t have many faults,” she explains. To win, she says, you should have a good animal and show it to the best of your ability, but notes, “Even if you have an average ani mal and show it to the best of your ability you usually get somewhere.” Cynthia’s grandfather, George Showers, who is with the Ameri can Breeders Service, currently is milking 21 registered Holsteins.
