people of Maryland and the coun

and conservation are alive and

like him!”
Williams and his wife, Christ
ina, have incorporated practices
such as no-till, contour strips, crop
rotations, waterways, diversions,
sediment control ponds, and inte
grated pest management into their
farm management plan. “With a
dwindling base of good farmland
in our area, coupled with low com
modity prices in recent years, we
must make the most of our avail
able land,” says Williams. “Far
mers have an obligation to prevent
adverse effects to other elements
of society caused by runoff from
their farming operations,” he con
tinued. “Farmers also have an obli
gation to help conserve the
nation’s resources for future gen
erations,” Williams concluded.
