This was a decline of less than 1 percent from last year’s record high production. The number of milk cows in the Commonwealth during the month averaged 718,000 head, the same as in April but down 12,000 from May 1986. Milk production per cow averaged 1,270 pounds in May, up 90 pounds from April and 20 pounds from the previous May. Milk production in the 21 states surveyed during May 1987 totaled 11 billion pounds, a 2 percent decline for the same period in 1986.
