Nanette Bushong Shines
County 1987-88 Oaky Princess
BY SUZANNE KEENE
LANCASTER - Nanette
Bushong, a Hempfield High School
senior, was selected 1987-88
Lancaster County Dairy Princess
during ceremonies at the Farm
and Home Center Saturday
evening.
Helping her with her respon
sibilities as the dairy industry’s
ambassador will be alternate
princesses Julie Greider, the
daughter of C. Robert and Marian
Greider of Columbia, and Irene
Zug, the daughter of Ed and
Debbie Zug of Peach Bottom.
The 16-year-old daughter of
Glenn and Ruthie Bushong of
Columbia R 3, Nanette helps her
family with the chores on their
Holstein dairy farm. Her main
responsibility is feeding calves and
cleaning up after milking.
The new princess, who plans a
career in elementary education, is
looking forward to telling
youngsters about the benefits of
drinking milk. “Developing good
habits in younger children is one of
my goals,” she said.
Although her senior year of high
school promises to be a busy one,
Nanette is sure she will find lots of
time for promoting milk as dairy
princess. “I’m sure I’ll find time.
This will be pretty high on my
list,” she notes.
To win the glittering crown and
satiny banner that come with the
title, Nanette impressed the judges
with her on-stage composure and
her promotional presentation. For
her short presentation, a required
part of the contest, Nanette por
trayed a student who took a
summer job wearing a signboard
promoting milk. She made sure to
tell each person she met, regar
dless of their age, how consuming
milk and other dairy products
would benefit them.
Nanette received her crown and
banner from Pamela Kindig, 1986
Lancaster County and Penn
sylvania State Dairy Princess.
Nanette is a member of the
junior historians club at school and
has been an active member of the
Mountville Community 4-H Club
for nine years. She is serving her
fourth year as an officer in that
club and is also a member of the
Lancaster 4-H Exchange Club.
Nanette works at The Rag Shop,
a fabric and craft store, and enjoys
reading, swimming and

Solanco High School. She has been

Society and serves as a reading
tutor. She enjoys playing flute,
raising rabbits and doing farm
chores. Her family raises 80
Holsteins.
