Nanette Bushong Shines County 1987-88 Oaky Princess BY SUZANNE KEENE LANCASTER - Nanette Bushong, a Hempfield High School senior, was selected 1987-88 Lancaster County Dairy Princess during ceremonies at the Farm and Home Center Saturday evening. Helping her with her respon sibilities as the dairy industry’s ambassador will be alternate princesses Julie Greider, the daughter of C. Robert and Marian Greider of Columbia, and Irene Zug, the daughter of Ed and Debbie Zug of Peach Bottom. The 16-year-old daughter of Glenn and Ruthie Bushong of Columbia R 3, Nanette helps her family with the chores on their Holstein dairy farm. Her main responsibility is feeding calves and cleaning up after milking. The new princess, who plans a career in elementary education, is looking forward to telling youngsters about the benefits of drinking milk. “Developing good habits in younger children is one of my goals,” she said. Although her senior year of high school promises to be a busy one, Nanette is sure she will find lots of time for promoting milk as dairy princess. “I’m sure I’ll find time. This will be pretty high on my list,” she notes. To win the glittering crown and satiny banner that come with the title, Nanette impressed the judges with her on-stage composure and her promotional presentation. For her short presentation, a required part of the contest, Nanette por trayed a student who took a summer job wearing a signboard promoting milk. She made sure to tell each person she met, regar dless of their age, how consuming milk and other dairy products would benefit them. Nanette received her crown and banner from Pamela Kindig, 1986 Lancaster County and Penn sylvania State Dairy Princess. Nanette is a member of the junior historians club at school and has been an active member of the Mountville Community 4-H Club for nine years. She is serving her fourth year as an officer in that club and is also a member of the Lancaster 4-H Exchange Club. Nanette works at The Rag Shop, a fabric and craft store, and enjoys reading, swimming and James Huber, county commissioner president, and State Dairy Princess Pamela Kindig propose a toast to June Dairy Month during the Lancaster County dairy princess pageant Saturday evening. babysitting Alternate princess Julie Greider was selected Miss Congeniality. A senior at Hempfield High School, Julie is a member of the National Honor Society and was on the distinguished honor roll. She plays on the field hockey and basketball teams and is a member of the 4-H Baby Beef Club. Her family has 158 head of Holsteins on their farm. Irene Zug, who will also serve as an alternate princess, is a senior at Solanco High School. She has been active in band and National Honor Society and serves as a reading tutor. She enjoys playing flute, raising rabbits and doing farm chores. Her family raises 80 Holsteins. Judges for the pageant were Charlene Courtney, a former Somerset County and state dairy princess who now resides in Berlin; Harvey Smith, a teacher and employee of the Department of Education from Schaefferstown; ishong, center. Distinction Awards, recognizing county farmers who have attractive farms, were presented to: Roy Book, Luke Brubaker, Eugene Burkholder, Galen Crouse, Horace Jackson, Jay Landis, James and Susan Musser, Weaver Homestead Farm, Marvin Witmer and Martin and Loren Zimmerman.
