Recently I attended “Craft
Days” at the Landis Valley
Museum near Lancaster. I went
with several of my children in
fact our milk tank driver said our
place looked like a lot for used
cars. Considering the fact that I
purchased a new one not so long
ago that statement didn’t make me
too happy. One was a rented car as
our daughter flew from Atlanta as
a consultant for her recent em
ployer.
But back to the craft show at the
museum. There were some 30
volunteers demonstrating their
particular interests. I’d guess we
saw only half of them as they were
scattered over the grounds.
Many brought back memories.
Broom making was in process and
I remembered that my grand
father grew broom corn and then

The blacksmith shop reminded
me of the times that I led our two
work horses, Ben and Fred, to the
shop five miles away. No, I wasn’t
allowed to ride them. I had to lead
them to the shop.
The most interesting demon
stration to me was the flax and
wool processing. I’m always
amazed at the time consumed in
making a small amount of thread.
And, then when I considered that it
had yet to be woven into cloth.
Even the preparation of the flax
plants, before spinning could
begin, was tremendously time
consuming. When I grew flax in
my garden, I always enjoyed the
beautiful small blue flowers that it
had.
This year I didn’t notice that
