LEES PORT Six contestants will compete for the 1987 Berks County Dairy Princess title Saturday, May 16 at the County Agricultural Center. The contestants are Kay Fessler, R 1 Robesonia; Linda Latshaw, R 1 Alburtis; Clarinda Leatherman, R 2 Hamburg; Shaun O’Neil, R 2 Hamburg; Cathleen Ohlinger, E 2 Mohrsville; and Heather Schlegel, R 2 Fleetwood. Prior to the 7 p.m. banquet, a panel of three judges will interview the contestants to test their knowledge of the dairy industry. Contestants will also give a promotional presentation about milk and/or other dairy products. The contestants and their mothers were introduced to the program at an orientation lun cheon held recently at the home of Carol Kurtz, the current Berks County dairy princess, and at several workshops held prior to the contest. The workshops included public speaking, poise, color analysis, dairy science and nutrition. Contestant Kay Fessler is a junior at Conrad Weiser High School, where she is president of the FFA chapter. She is also active in the Conrad Weiser marching and concert bands, Hain’s Church youth group, Junior Classical League, yearbook staff and prom committee. Kay enjoys reading, animals, and working with people, especially children. Kay’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Fessler, milk 83 Holsteins and farm alfalfa, corn and grain crops on their 600 acres at Robesonia Rl. Linda Latshaw, the daughter of Earl and Joyce Latshaw, Rl Alburtis, is a junior at Brandywine Heights High School. SHe is an officer in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America; a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, the Hereford Mennonite Church and youth group. During her spare time, Linda can be found drawing, cross stitching or working on a com puter. The Latshaw family has been on their 171-acre farm for 51 years and milks 48 Holsteins. The daughter of Dan and Nancy Leatherman of R 2 Hamburg, Clarinda is a senior at Christopher Dock Mennonite High School, where she is a school business assistant. She is president of her church youth group at Oley Mennonite Church and spends her late afternoons working part-time as a bookkeeper for the Harleysville National Bank. A former home ec 4-H member and officer, she enjoys baking, house and yard chores, crafts as well as talking and skiing. Clarinda’s parents own and operate a 147-acre dairy farm milking 60 Holsteins. Some of Cathleen’s favorite pasttimes include showing dairy cattle, riding horses, drawing, painting, reading, sewing, cooking, volleyball and some field work.
