National Sheep Groups To Hold Joint Meeting DENVER, Colo. - In a move that paves the way for the largest national sheep industry convention in recent history, the American Sheep Producers Council (ASPC) has agreed to conduct a joint an nual meeting with several other national organizations January 18- 20, 1988 in San Antonio, Texas. The ASPC action came during its semi annual meeting in Indianapolis, March 11-14. The joint meeting had been approved earlier this year by the National Wool Growers Association and the National Lamb Feeders Association during their respective 1987 annual meetings. The Cooperative Funding Program provides for ASPC state/regional sheep councils and national producer organizations to conduct promotional and educational activities that contribute to the accomplishment of ASCP ob jectives. Under the new program, each state will be eligible to receive the equivalent of one-half cent per pound of wool and 2Vz cents per hundredweight of unshorn lamb produced in the state. A minimum of $l,OOO will be allocated to all states regardless of pounds of wool and unshorn lamb produced for projects that are direct extensions of ASPC’s national programs. The program received approval from both ASPC and NWGA boards. 1. Wool Quality Improvement: NWGA will develop and conduct a wool quality improvement program targeted to production and raw wool marketing levels. 2. Consumer Preferred Lean Lamb Marketing: NWGA will survey packing plants throughout the United States to determine cutability characteristics of lamb and will communicate the findings to packers, feeders and producers. 3. ASPC Budget for Fiscal Year 1987/88 The ASPC Board ap proved the 86,176,000 budget for the fiscal year which begins July 1. This amount is based on 5 cents a pound for shorn wool and 25 cents a hundredweight for unshorn lamb deducted this spring from producer wool incentive payments. The new budget increases allocations for consumer promotions by 50 percent.
