Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser During those warm days a while ago, I made a start on my spring work. Several wheelbarrow loads of twigs were hauled from the yard together with pine needles. Also removed from the garden were some fences which protected my cabbage and peanuts from a groundhog that lives under an old locust stump near the edge of the garden. I’d surely like to get rid of this animal as he’s eaten quite a bit of my garden produce. When I look through the seed catalogs, I’m amazed at the number of things that are tor sale other than the usual vegetables, fruits and flowers that you’d ex pect to see there. An in-house bird feeder intrigued me but the price was too high. And if you don’t want to use chemical sprays and powders, you can buy a 17-inch vinyl-molded Great Horned Owl or a 6-foot in flatable reptile to scare off hungry birds. To help your garden along, you might purchase a package of ladybugs to devour the destructive insects. Or maybe you’d want to try some packages of earthworms to increase the soil fertility. Whatever you want, they have it. Now if the weather cooperates, I hope to have the garden rototilled and planted with sugar peas before the end of the month.
