The guide, which has been prepared by Penn State faculty in horticulture, en tomology, plant pathology and agricultural engineeri ng, is designed to help commercial vegetable growers make informed management decisions. Topics covered in the guide include soil selection and management, varieties, specialty vegetables, air pollution injury, nematode sampling, diagnosis of vegetable crop problems, the safe use of pesticides, and production of disease free seedlings and transplants. Methods of disease, insect and weed control for each crop are also discussed. Included are tables of proper spacing for planting the crops and the necessary time periods between spraying and har vesting. Other tables in the production guide in clude formulations of herbicides and their effectiveness on some common weeds, as well as a list of herbicides available for use on vegetables. The authors of the guide have given careful consideration to protecting the en vironment. Chemicals unduly hazardous to the environment have been eliminated from the guide, and non-chemical control methods are encouraged.
