DlB-Lancast«r Farming Saturday, December 20,1986 Saner Brothers Cop Juniata DMA Awards MIFFLINTOWN - Rick and Ralph Saner of Thompsontown R.D. are the co-owners of the top herd in Juniata County’s Dairy Herd Improvement Association for the 1985-86 testing year. Their 50 registered Hoisteins averaged 23,403 pounds of milk, 842 pounds of fat and 746 pounds of protein. In Saners’ herd, 12 cows com pleted lactations with an average of 850 pounds of fat or better and/or 23,000 pounds of milk. The Saner brothers received the most improved fat award with an in crease of 132 pounds of fat. They also increased their herd average by 3,420 pounds of milk and 100 pounds of protein over their 1985 average. Barry Lucas of Millerstown R.D. 2 garnered the award for greatest increase in milk and protein with increases of 3,952 pounds of milk and 115 pounds of protein. Lucas received recognition for his second place herd of 47 Holsteins averaging 21,570 pounds of milk, 777 pounds of fat and 683 pounds of protein. James Speer Jr. of Blairs Mills owned the highest individual cow based on fat. His grade Holstein, “Babs,” completed her lactation with 26,322 pounds of milk and 1,142 pounds of fat. James Wilson of Mifflintown earned the award for lowest somatic cell count by maintaining a count of 122,000. Others herds producing over 700 pounds of fat per cow include: Mark Zook, Mifflin, 733; Daryl and Del Brubaker, McAlisterville, 708; and Harold Shearer, East Waterford, 708. The Juniata County DHIA completed its 63rd year with 86 whole-year and seven owner sampler. The 4,664 cows tested in the county averaged 16,559 pounds of milk, 592 pounds of fat and 522 pounds of protein for a new high.
