Matter of Pride. Be Certified.” The Environmental Protection Agency is currently reviewing all pesticides, classifying them as either general- or restricted-use. Many general-use pesticides that farmers have used in the past have been reclassified as restricted-use by the EPA, and more are likely to follow. By law, all farm chemical users must be certified to buy or apply restricted use pesticides. To become certified, a farmer must satisfactorily complete an applicator certification training program conducted by his state. Information on the certification training program can be obtained through the county extension of fice, the state university college of agriculture or the state depart ment of agriculture. Topics discussed during cer tification training include: safety procedures, reading labels, mixing, calibration, application, storage, disposal, weed, insect and disease identification, en vironmental issues, and laws and regulations. “All farmers can use additional information to do a better job using pesticides," he says. “The cer tification training program is designed to make each grower more knowledgeable in safe chemical use. And, in the end, a knowledgeable farmer is a better farmer.
