Instead, they’re shaping their futures themselves. James A. Shirk of East Earl, is a leader among that elite group. Shirk has been named one of the 10 national finalists in the Future Farmers of America’s 1986 “Achievement in Volunteensm” awards competition. He was also the state winner in the 1986 “Achievement in Volunteerism” competition, which honors out standing personal contributions to the FFA’s “Building Our American Communities’’ program. BOAC is a community development program sponsored by RJR Nabisco, Inc. to foster York County 4-H Council met Nov. 5 at the Extension Office, Pleasant Acres. FFA'er Is Finalist In Achievement In Volunteerism Competition youth leadership skills Each year, members of more than 1,500 FFA chapters participating in the BOAC program study their communities’ needs, seek sources for materials, funds and assistance, and then volunteer their own time and labor to the projects. The labor that FFA members donate to BOAC projects is estimated to be worth more than $9.5 million a year. Under Shirk’s leadership, the Grassland FFA Chapter in New Holland, enhanced habitats for fish and wildlife in their state, and increased their expertise in wildlife management practices. The chapter helped raise more than $16,000 to purchase property for gamelands that will preserve wildlife for future generations in their county. They also renovated a spnnghouse for rearing trout and planted trees along a local trout stream. Council York 4-11 Week; Rhonda Jacoby, county achievement night; and Robin Shive, beef/sheep round up. The top ten county cookie salesmen were awarded prizes. The next meeting will be held Dec. 3 at the 4-H Center, Bair. The program will be trimming a Christmas tree. Each club should have two representatives present. Bass, senior vice president of RJR Nabisco. Shirk attended the five-day FFA National Conference on Com munity Development in Washington, D.C., last month. The students attended workshops and discussed leadership respon sibilities with elected officials and government administrators, in cluding Secretary of Agriculture Richard Lyng. BOAC is supported by a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Departments of Education and Agriculture. Through its sponsorship of the BOAC program, RJR Nabisco has become FFA’s first milhon-dollar contributor.
