Correspondent HARNEY, Md. - “Recall the Past; Plan for the Future” served as the program theme at the Adams County Holstein Club’s recent banquet and 35th Annual Meeting. Club President David Kehr welcomed the 100 plus breeders and friends of the industry that packed the fireball for an evening of reminiscing about the past and projecting the future of the club and the breed. Kehr introduced some of the charter members of the club and also noted a number of third generation members in the crowd. One of the highlights of the evening was a slide presentation prepared by County Extension Director Tom Piper. Piper and long-time club member Adam Lobaugh narrated the slide show that not only traced the history of the Adams County Holstein Club, but also chronicled the evolution of the dairy industry in Adams County. Kenneth Raney, Pennsylvania Holstein Association, followed on the program with an update on the PFU Convention Slated For Nov. 10-12 WILLIAMSPORT - The Penn sylvania Farmers Union will hold its 15th Annual Convention Nov. 10 to 12 at the Genetti Lycoming Hotel in Williamsport. The theme will be “The Courage to Make a Change.” Approximately 250 elected delegates of the general farm organization will convene to vote on policy resolutions and by-law proposals submitted by county chapters in recent weeks. “This is the most important event of the year for us,” said PFU Executive Director Chester L. Reed. “The policy decisions of our members form the foundation of our day-to-day legislative program.” Reed explained that any resolutions passed by the Penn sylvania delegates are forwarded to the National Farmers Union for consideration at its March, 1987 convention in Fort Worth, Tex. “We’re definitely a grass roots Association’s current membership drive, the need for more ad vertising in the Association’s Magazine, Profiles, and the 1987 State Convention plans. Turning towards the future, Raney en couraged the breeders to keep their registrations current, to remain optimistic about their export prospects, and to take full advantage of the industry’s latest technologies. Youth Chairman Robert Clowney presented a Holstein jacket to the winner of the junior production contest for high milk and fat records. This year’s winner in both categories was an Elevation daughter owned by Jennifer Weimer, New Oxford, Pa. The winning cow’s record in 305 days was 24,341 pounds of milk and 857 pounds of fat. The group will also hear a variety of speakers address the strengths and weaknesses of current agricultural policies and programs. The keynote address will be given by Dr. Wayne D. Rasmussen, a historian with USDA’s Economic Research Service. Dr. Rasmussen has devoted much of his career to the technological, economic, and social changes that have taken place in agriculture.
