FRED MC CARTY RFDI, Turbotville, PA 17772 meeting, Kellers Church, 7 p.m. Herr Farms Angus Sale, Not tingham, 10 a.m. years.” Depending on the weeds to be controlled, Belt suggests growers consider using the following herbicides. * Premerge or Dinitro works well on chickweed, henbit and some mustards. “These are contact herbicides, so don’t use them unless the weeds are already present but still small,” he cautions. “Treat after the first frost, but wait until temperatures climb back above 50 degrees F. ” * Simazine (Princep, Sim-trol and others) is a broad spectrum product which works well on chickweed, henbit and knawel as well as on seedling yellow rocket, shepherd’s purse and dandelion. This herbicide can be used on pure alfalfa or alfalfa/orchard grass mixtures that are at least a year old. Apply in the fall before the ground freezes. • 2,4-DB ( Butyroc or Butoxone) is active on small broadleaf weeds such as mustards and shepherd’s purse, but the weeds must be small, and the temperature must be above 50 degrees at the time of application. Several warm days in a row will improve herbicide ac tivity. * Furloe is very active on chickweed, Belt says, and can be applied any time during the fall or early winter while the weeds are small. It can be impregnated on fertilizers when making fall or winter fertilizer applications. * Kerb is labeled for use on new and established alfalfa and red clover stands to control bluegrass, chickweed, orchardgrass, quackgrass, some mustards and wild radish. The rate will depend on the weeds to be controlled. Apply this product in the fall, since water is necessary to move it into the root zone. The soil temperature should be below 50 degrees, but the ground must not be frozen. * MCPA is active on many broadleaf weeds including plamtam, dandelion and many of the mustards. Apply it after frost in the fall, when alfalfa is dormant. Spray when the temperature is above 50 degrees. “Though herbicides can help, the best weed control for alfalfa is a strong stand,” Belt stresses. “Soil test to determine proper lime and fertilizer rates and then be sure to apply them. For vigorous growth, this crop must be fertilized properly.”
