Slaughter steers and heifers met
with good buyer demand this week
and prices for both classes ad
vanced 1.00-L5O over the previous
weeks levels. A primary factor in
this week’s upturn was the higher
prices posted at direct selling
areas of the midwest and high
plains.
Slaughter cows met with sharp
downturns on the close and prices
closed 1.00-2.00 lower. Slaughter
bulls weak to 1.00 lower.
Estimated 5 day receipts of
cattle this week 7,000 compared to
actuals last week of 7,553 and 8,732
last year. Slaughter steers ac
counted for 36 percent of receipts
this week, slaughter heifers 37
percent, slaughter cows 5 percent
and feeder cattle 20 percent.

sales choice 2-41100-1350 lbs. 60.00-
61.00, load 61.50. Mixed good and
choice 2-3 1050-1200 lbs. 58.50-60.00.

Poultry Nutrition
Short Course Offered
The first session of the 1986
Delmarva Poultry Nutrition Short
Course will be held Wednesday,
October 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the
University of Delaware Research
& Education Center in
Georgetown.
Spnsored by the University of
Delaware, the Delaware
Cooperative Extension System and
the Delmarva Poultry Industry,
the course will consist of four
weekly meetings featuring
speakers from industry and
university research programs.
Three of the sessions will be held
at the Georgetown Center and the
fourth will be at the Holiday Inn at
Salisbury, Md. Registration is $2O,
and the course is open to everyone
regardless of race, color, sex,
handicap, age or national origin.
The opening program will
feature a talk on nutrition and
physiology of broiler breeder
males by Dr. Gayner R. McDaniel
of Auburn University. Dr. Paul
Marini of Arbor Acres Farm will
also speak on live, dressed and
foliage plants for the home, patio
plants and hanging baskets, a
nature walk with shade-loving
plants, and a landscaped garden
gazebo.
The Hort Show is managed,
organized and constructed by Penn
State students in the Horticulture
Club. Proceeds from plant and
food sales support club activities,
trips to regional gardens and
student scholarships. Last year,

The November 12 meeting will
focus on body fat. James Chamb
ers of Agricultural Canada will
speak on genetics and body fat;
Dr. Gene Pesti of the University of
Georgia will discuss nutritional
control of body fat.
The final meeting, November 19,
will begin with a social hour
followed by dinner. The guest
speaker will be Bill Roenigk,
director of economic research for
the National Broiler Council. He
will speak on future marketing and
consumption trends.
