Hay Creek Apple Festival Planned For Oct . 11 GEIGERTOWN - The Hay Creek Valley Apple Festival will be held at Historic Joanna Furnace near Morgantown Oct. 11 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association will be serving up a full range of apple recipes and other foods. Both admission and parking are free. Visitor parking for this festival will be on Joanna Furnace grounds. Visitors will be able to enjoy traditional apple foods prepared by HCV as well as a number of local civic and church organizations. The Hay Creek Apple Festival is a casual event and visitors are urged to dress casually in order to take part in the festivities. A hearty “working man’s” breakfast starts the day. This all you-can-eat meal consists of apple pancakes, syrup, apple juice and coffee. It will be served from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. From 10 a.m. on a com prehensive menu of the following will be served: chicken pot pie, homemade bread, applesauce, mulled apple cider, apple fritters, apple dumplings, schnitz and knepp, apple pies, apple tarts, candy apples, apple brown betty, applesauce cake and apple jelly. Famous Hay Creek Apple Butter will also be available. Most of these foods will be made from “scratch” right in the Joanna Furnace kitchen. At 10 a.m., judging will be held in the HCV Apple Dessert Contest. Categories include: apple cakes, apple pies, apple breads and muffins, and apple desserts. One grand prize of $5O will be awarded overall. First, second and third prize ribbons will be awarded in each of the four categories. This year’s judges are Mary Jo Dodge and Marge Nester, home economics teachers in the Reading School District, and Mary Jacobs, a former home economics teacher. Other judges will be announced later. In addition to the food, a flea market will be held along with numerous old-time games. The entire family will be able to join in games and events that were common during the time that Joanna Furnace was in blast. Visitors can participate in board games such as checkers, mill game, parchesee; or quoits or more active old-time games. Families can even take part in building scarecrows. For those interested in the historic aspects of Joanna Fur nace, an introductory video will be shown continuously all day long. Archaeologists will be working at the charcoal house and will be available to answer questions about the research and restoration currently underway. At 2 p.m. two tractor events will take place. Numerous classes of “slow tractor races” and “quick start” races will be on going. The Hay Creek Valley Apple Festival will be held at Historic Joanna Furnace 3 miles north of Morgantown on PA Route 10. Raindate for severe weather conditions only will be Sunday, Oct. 12. HCV is a non-profit organization and net proceeds are used to support objectives of the organization, a primary objective being the restoration of the Joanna Furnace Plantation. 17 3
