Correspondent INDIANA - The 1986 recipient of the grand champion steer award at the Indiana County Fair was John Coleman. John is the 21-year old son of H. D. Coleman, RDI, Saltsburg. John is a final-year member of the Apollo Ridge FF A. Coleman captured this title with his light heavyweight Simmental. In John’s own words after receiving the honor, “I was hoping to get something this year since it is my last year, but I wasn’t ex pecting this.” Tammy Binion, 17-year-old Marion Center FFA member, grinned from ear to ear when the reserve grand champion banner was placed on her light heavyweight crossbred steer. A total of 41 steers were exhibited in this year’s show, with the breeds represented including Hereford, Angus, crossbreed, Limousin, Chianina, Simmental and Charolais. Swine Show On Monday, Aug. 25, many of Indiana County’s swine exhibitors were anxiously awaiting to have their hog weighed for their exhibition on Tuesday. Monday’s excitement was carried over to Tuesday while many exhibitors were preparing for the day’s event. After many months of preparation each of the 64 FFA and 4-H members anxiously waited to enter the show area to compete for the ultimate position of grand champion market hog 1986. Tina Binion, Indiana was the lone exhibitor in the Chester breed, receiving the grand champion award. Bryan Martin exhibited the one out of 35 cross hogs that received the top award. Lisa Martin showed her 220-pound cross to stand in the reserve grand champion spot. In the cross-o category, Bryan Martin also stood in the top position while Julie Mikesell oc cupied the reserve grand cham pion spot. The champion Duroc title was received by Veron Lockhart of Marion Center. Dennis Chambers captured the reserve grand champion title. Bryan Martin captured his third champion award of the day with his 215-pound Hampshire, while Valerie Fyock received the reserve champion Hampshire award. Brandi Mikesell, veteran hog exhibitor, showed her Poland China to the champion position. Julie Mikesell, Brandi’s sister, stood in the reserve grand champion spot. Brother and sister team, Lisa and Harry Coleman took the awards respectively in the Spot competition. The final show of the day before choosing the grand champion and reserve grand champion market hog was the Yorkshire show. Standing in the grand champion position at the end of the day was Bryan Martin with his 220-pound Cross. Reserve grand champion title was awarded to Jim Scott and his 230 Berkshire hog. Sheep Show On a late August morning in Indiana County, with the weather being very cool and rainy, each of the 35 junior lamb show par ticipants were meticulously preparing their animals for the show. In the crossbred class Adrienne Elkin stood at the top of the most competitive class of the day. Adrienne captured the position with her 103-pound animal. Southern livestock member Patrick Zagrodnichek, was the exhibitor of the best Hampshire of the day. Jason Snyder was the lone exhibitor of the Oxford breed capturing the top honor with his 90- pound lamb. Jason’s older brother Jonathan, exhibited the top Shropshire of the day. For many years Laura Kwisnek has watched her uncle and cousins show sheep, but this year it was Laura’s turn to exhibit her own prize sheep. Laura led her Southdown to the top position. The Suffolks were the last sheep of the day to be shown and Howard Cattau of Chine led his 120-pound lamb to the winners spot. The grand champion of the show went to Jonathan Snyder and his 111-pound Shrop lamb. Young Adrienne Elkin captured the reserve grand champion position with her 103-pound cross lamb.
