Little Buffalo Arts NEWPORT - The Little Buffalo Festival of the Arts will be held at scenic Little Buffalo State Park, RD2, Newport, Sept. 20. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., a variety of musicians and artists will en tertain the public from one of two sites at the park’s east end, near the pavilion in the area of the dam. The ever-popular Children’s Area will have many activities for the young and also the young-at heart. At noon The Puppet Factory will have a puppet theatre per formance followed by a puppet making workshop. At 4 p.m., Ed and Geraldine Berbaum will sing and play old-time music using fiddle, guitar, banjo and mandolin. They will tell stones and jokes especially for the children. Reading Fair Hoedowning, Jigging replaced the country fiddle. In an effort to balance this trend, the Reading Fair instituted a READING - The Reading Fair Hoedowning and Jigging Com petition will take place at Center Court in the Fairgrounds Square Mall from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. The popular event will feature the Feick Family Band and John Stinsman as emcee. Hoedowning and jigging have been as much a part of the Penn sylvania Dutch folk culture as shoofly pie and sauerkraut. Something new of interest this year will be two workshops at Shoaff’s Mill. Starting at 2 p.m., Ed and Geraldine Berbaum will lead a musical jam for those bringing their own string in struments. At 5 p.m., anyone can join in and square dance with the Coal Country Cloggers. A juried arts and crafts sale with 39 artisans from surrounding counties will be held. All works are original creations and were judged by Dr. David Van Dommelen, head of Penn State’s art education department. hoedowning and jigging contest six years ago. The hoedowning and jigging contest has been the most popular entertainment feature of the fair for the past several years. It consistently draws more than two thousand spectators for its Saturday night spectacular. This contest will feature close to 100 participants, ranging in ages from six to 60, and in a variety of classes, based on age and dance form. Chicken Cooking Contest Deadline Nears WASHINGTON, D.C. - When it comes to cooking chicken, no state has a monopoly on prize-winning recipes. Contestants from every part of the nation have walked away with top honors in the National Chicken Cooking Contest since 1971 when the first $lO,OOO prize was captured by the Arkansas entry. Only Delaware can claim two national chicken cooking champions. Finalists from that state won the competition in 1972 and again 1973. Sallie was also named to the Honor Roll, recognizing her nine years of membership and leadership in 4-H. Tammy Long was a finalist in the Outstanding 4-H’er competition and for mem bership on the Honor Roll for her eight years of membership in 4-H. The Club also won the volleyball competition. Members of the 12- man team were; co-captains, Sallie Gregory and Tammy Long, Diane and Phillip Eberly, Christa and Tim Weaver, Ron and Todd Wardell, Kim Hartzler, Ann Vath, Chris Miller, Doug Deibler, and Eric Rotenberry. The club’s scrapbook, compiled by president Tammy Long, won a gold ribbon. Their exhibit, which highlighted the club’s project of collecting hay for 4-H’ers in Ashboro, N.C. won a blue ribbon. Other club winners at the Fair were as follows: Phillip Eberly and Amy Seaton both won blue ribbons for their Horse Quiz Books, which are for first and second year members. In the art competition, Ann Vath won a gold ribbon for her oil painting of two horses, and to fame and fortune, followed by Idaho, New Jersey and Georgia. The 1978 spotlight turned to California with the District of Columbia, South Dakota and In diana then producing winners. In 1983, the last year the contest was held annually, the $lO,OOO chicken recipe came from Kansas. Now on an alternate year schedule, the Cook-Off was won in 1985 by the Oregon contestant. Sallie Gregory won a blue for her bread making efforts. In the Talent show, Laura Seaton became a semi-finalist for her singing and guitar playing, and Ann Vath won a third place for her singing rendition of “Send In The Clowns.” Rose Fellenbaum, leader of the Boots and Saddles Club, initiated the county wide 4-H effort to collect and send hay to needy 4-H’ers in Ashboro, N.C., with whom the club had an exchange program back in 1983-84. The club members donated over 200 bales, and provided the transportation for all hay collected at the Fair. Hay came from many different clubs and members of 4-H, as well as from friends of 4-H. Trucks and trailers for transporting the hay were loaned by McCracken’s Feed Mill Inc. of Manheim, Herr and Sacco Inc., mechanical con tractors in Landisville, and by- Rose and Dan Fellenbaum of Fellenbaum Stables, Lititz. One train box car load of hay was collected, and is on its way to N.C. It is hoped that this effort will be repeated in Jan./Feb.
