Griggs Tops Crawford Co.

MEADVILLE The young
owners of the champion and
reserve champion market swine
brought home the bacon from the
14th annual 4-H Livestock Market
Sale at the recent Crawford County
Fair held at the fairgrounds in
Meadville. Both porkers shattered
previous sale records with prices
that notched a 50 percent increase.
Gamering champion for the first
time, 13-year-old Tina Cutshall of
Meadville sold her 255-pound hog
to Reimold Brothers for $6 per
pound. The previous record of $3.50
per pound was set last year on a
purchase by First National Bank.
This year, First National Bank
purchased the reserve champion,
owned by Brenda Holsopple of
Venango, for $5.75 a pound which
tops a 1982 record price of $3.15 a
pound.
Including the champions, 34 hogs

year. The 10-year-old member of
the Conneaut Lake Ag Club sold
her 124-pound lamb to Thorne’s
Supermarket for $9.50 per pound.
Thome’s also purchased Griggs’
1985 champion lamb.
Mike Ernst, a member of the
same club, garnered a bid of $9.25
for his 113-pound reserve cham
pion from auctioneers Nicolls and
Allen.
The 45 lambs brought an average
of $2.30 per pound; with the
champion’s price added in the
average increased to $2.62.
Auctioneers for the fast-paced
sale were Earl, Dave and Bruce
Nicolls, Gary Shidemantle, George
Palhunik and Sherman Allen.
Several of the sale animals were
purchased and later donated to
area non-profit groups.
