LOUIS, Mo. - Another bin busting corn crop is in the making, and the USDA is taking steps to help corn growers find space to store it. In addition, the USDA is working to find new markets for those crops, said Richard Lyng, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Lyng spoke at a closing session of the National Oorn Growers Association annual convention last month. Noting concern about storage of a large crop, along with huge carryovers and a slow market, Lyng said the USDA is taking steps to help farmers find storage space. They include: • Utilization of excess barge capacity for temporary storage. • Approval of emergency temporary storage space in James Houser, left, claimed the grand championship of the Holstein show, with Irene Benner taking the reserve grand championship. Noting the need to eventually sell those crops, Lyng said the new farm bill will make export com modities more competitive with sharply Ipwer and more flexible loan rates. “We are no longer giving a free ride to competitors, nor are we providing our com petitors strong incentives to put more land into production,” Lyng said. Lyng promised to "begin recapturing a fuller and fairer share of world markets for American farmers. ’ ’ He asked for patience and un derstanding by American corn growers as U.S. representatives negotiate farm export provisions through the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). "Free trade according to sound rules is fair and beneficial to consumers and producers alike,” he said of the global trade talks. While there has been some concern about an overall U.S. trade deficit, Lyng promised a favorable trade balance for agricultural producers in 1986 of about $7 or $8 billion. "That’s lower than it has been and is reason for some concern,” he said, “but all signs point to an improvement in that situation in the months ahead.” TROY-BILT met SALE!
