HARRISBURG - The South- Central District 4-H Dairy Show, held Monday in the Farm Show building’s small arena, proved to be a dress rehearsal for some showman. Blue ribbon recipients from this show will return in late September to conclude their 1986 4- H tan bark trail with a walk around the Farm Show’s large arena. In the Jersey breed, Mary Ellen Deaven, Cumberland County, captured the grand championship with her 9-year-old cow, Faithful Advancer Colleen. Judge William Schnebly noted her good fore and rear udders, as well as her smooth general appearance. Colleen stood in the grand champion position of this show last year. Her best showing was her 1983 reserve grand championship of the 1983 All- American Show. Mary Ellen purchased Colleen from her sister, Marilyn Zinn, after Marilyn completed her FFA career. CoUen classified at EX-90 and produced a top record of 13,000 pounds of milk with a 5.6 test. Tina Martin, Franklin County, claimed the reserve grand position with her 5-year-old, Cowdale Samsonite Delight. Helen Arrowsmith, Lancaster County, claimed both junior champion positions. Dale Mummert, a member of Franklin County’s Northern 4-H Dairy Club, captured Guernsey grand champion laurels with Chestnuts Premier Trixie. A 4- year-old daughter of Eastern Glow Wistar Premier, she came to Mummert’s show string three years ago because of her strong show qualities. Cumberland County’s Jeffrey McCullough took the reserve grand championship with his 3-year-old, Trotacre Maverick Rose. Holstein honors went to the Thomas McCauley’s 5-year-old entry, Queen Star Sexy, in a close placing over Aldean Crider’s 4- year-old cow. Shaw credited Sexy with an advantage in height, sharpness over the withers and depth of body. He praised both cows as being a “super pair of cows.” Sexy, a daughter of Ocean View Sexation, has been shown by McCauley since 1981. During that period, his father, Dr. Alan Mc- Cauley, notes “she has only had one bad day.” Her most recent championship was at the South- Central Holstein Championship show. Crider, Chambersburg, showed his Antrim-Spring Mars Pete daughter to the reserve spot of the Holstein show. She produced a top record of 19,000 pounds of milk and classified at VG-87.
