Colored Breed Champions Named At Kutztown Fair BY ROBIN PHILLIPS Berks Co. Correspondent KUTZTOWN - Colored breeds enjoyed a good showing at the 1986 Kutztown Fair as over 100 dairy animals from the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Jersey breeds paraded before judge Steve Shaw, Delaware Valley College, dairy husbandry graduate, at the Fair on Aug. 12. In the Ayrshire breed, Mark Price, Douglasville, exhibited the grand champion. His 3-year-old, Conebella H.C. Petulia caught the judge’s nod and bested the other entries. Reserve champion honors went to James Blatt, Robesonia, with his 4-year-old, Heindel G.M. Ella. Daryl Hoch, Oley, exhibited the junior champion, and Mark Price also showed the reserve junior champion. Randy Balthaser, Bernville, exhibited the grand champion Brown Swiss, Wind Mill Balison Gilda, a senior 2 year old. Reserve honors went to Tammy Balthaser, Bernville. Junior champion was taken by Troy Koenig, Bernville, and the reserve junior champion was shown by Tracy Schlappich, Bernville. Repeat winner, Clayton Snyder, Oley, captured the top spot in the Guernsey breed, with Sherri Zollers, Mertztown, taking reserve honors. Becky Snyder, Oley, took the junior championship ribbons while Sherri Zollers exhibited the reserve junior champion. In the Jersey breed, Carol Dreisbach, Hamburg, and her 3- year-old, Wilderness MMC Cupid, bested over 30 entries to take the grand championship. Irish Creek Jerseys, Mohrsville, exhibited the reserve grand champion, Irish Creek Magic Apache, a 4 year old. Junior champion rosettes were taken by Amy Phillips, Mohrsville, with her junior calf, Irish Creek Brass Desiree, and the reserve honors went to Carol Dreisbach with her senior calf, Wilderness Warrior Comet. Class winners, as well as showing and fitting results follow GU-Bred Angus wins in Kentucky NEW YORK - Restaurateur Jerry Brody expressed delight that his Gallagher’s Farm’s heifer, Marlene, was named the national champion Angus calf at the Kentucky State Fair held in Louisville Aug. 4 and 5. At the age of six months, Marlene stood 50% inches tall and weighed 660 pounds. The average Angus heifer of that age is 46 to 47 inches tall weighing 500 pounds.
