BY MARGIE FUSCO Cambria County Correspondent MEYERSDALE - Half-brother teers bred by the Robert Sher ood Farms in West Virginia took rand and reserve grand cham ion titles at the beef show during le Somerset County Fair, held ug. 19. The grand champion steer, a 270-pound Simmental cross, was used by Greta Mostoller of oswell. She purchased the steer t the Somerset County Club Calf ale, and the animal took top onors in a special Club Calf hampion class during the fair. The reserve grand champion ,eer, a 1,280-pound Chianina -oss, was raised by Kermit Stahl : Somerset. The steer was pur hased from Sherwood Farms. Both Mosteller and Stahl are icmbers of the Steak and Chops 4- Club. Their steers were among 1 entries in the day-long show, idged by Dr. Robert Herr, rational agriculture teacher and jef and sheep breeder from New olland. The 1986 show marked r. Herr’s fourth appearance as a dge at the Somerset Fair. In both years Brian’s pigs were bred by Omar and Nelson Beam of Elverson. The reserve champion was exhibited by Trudi Marsh of Honeybrook. Trudi, a longtime member of the club, has shown pigs for years, but the cham pionship always seemed to elude her. > This year Truth’s dream came true with a crossbred pig bred by her father, Tom, in their small farrow to feeder operation. Hatfield was again the suc cessful bidder, paying $2 per pound for the reserve champion. Jill Burkhart of Mohnton also had a good night. She exhibited the champion pen, which was bred by David Glass, and was named champion junior showman. Reserve junior showman was David Howe of Downington and reserve champion senior showman was Mike Stoltzfus of Elverson. Type and showmanship trophies were sponsored by the Lancaster- Chester County Swine Producers Association and pen trophies were sponsored by Markie and Jamie Travaglini of Thorndale. Hatfield purchased the cham pion pen for 85 cents per pound and Erb Transport of Elverson paid 87 cents per pound for the reserve champion pen. At the 1986 contest, held Aug. 18, Theresa Phillips exhibited her 123-pound Suffolk to win the top prize. Gretchen Sheeder of Somerset exhibited the reserve grand champion market lamb, a 122- pound Hampshire. The market lamb show was judged by Dr. Robert Herr of Lancaster County.
