ELVERSON - Mike Stoltzfus, the 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Stoltzfus of R 2 Elverson, exhibited the grand champion market hog at the recent Berks County FFA Swine Show and Sale. Mike will be a sophomore at Twin Valley High School and is a member of the Twin Valley FFA. He received the trophy presented by Eastern Pennsylvania Pork Producers. His 235-pound animal was sold to Doug Clemens of Hatfield Packing for $4.24 per pound. Reserve champion hog was shown by Henry Seidel, R 1 Lenhartsville, a 1986 graduate of Hamburg High School. Henry received the trophy presented by Hillside Acres Farm; Dennis, Lloyd, and Carl Cooper; Lenhartsville. Henry’s 230-pound hog was also purchased by Hat field Packing for $1.70 per pound. In the light lightweight class for pigs 180 to 200 pounds Leslie Lazarus of Whitehall, a member of Extension Seeks NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware Cooperative Extension System is accepting applications for its Master Gardener program, which will be launched in Kent and Sussex Counties this fall. The state’s first master gardeners received their certificates last spring in New Castle County. Applicants need not be county residents, but they must be able to work in Kent or Sussex County after they complete their training. In the senior division showmanship contest Todd Ben necoff was first, Henry Seidel second and Charles Seidel third. Todd Benencoff was the champion showman, receiving the trophy awarded by Elton Muth. Mike Stoltzfus was the reserve cham pion showman. Judge for the show was David Hartman, Cumberland County Extension agent and a former member of the Penn State Collegiate Livestock Judging Team. Combined weight of the 51 hogs sold was 11,155 pounds which sold for $8,886. Average weight was 218 pounds and average price was 70 cents excluding the grand and reserve champion animals. Other major purchasers were Newswanger’s Luncheonette, Pioneer Grange Topton, Leesport Market and Auction, Hazle Packing Company, Hereford Brothers, Berks Agway, Berks- Lehigh Production Credit, Dennis Wagner, and Myles Angstadt.
