A22-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 9,1956 Bomgardners Retain Premier Titles For Third Year BY MARTHA J. GEHRINGER LEBANON The top awards at the Lebanon Fair Open Holstein Show were family affairs. The John Bomgardner family, Ono, made it three in a row by capturing the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor awards for the third consecutive year. Gary Deck’s family, Lebanon, won the grand and senior championships for the first time, while Dale Hoetetter and sons claimed the reserve grand and reserve senior cham pionships. John and Margaret Bomgardner and their seven children repeated their banner winning efforts, in their 18th consecutive year of showing at the Fair, with help from the entire family. “The whole family helps with everything from pushing a broom to milking,” Margaret said. She also attributes their win to the use of Canadian breeding. Walking away with six first place ribbons, the Bomgardner family placed high in all the classes that their 22 head were entered. They also claimed the grand and reserve grand bull championships and the reserve junior championship. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it is a good way of comparing our cows with other farmers’ cows,” John stated. “I’m shocked, but I really feel good about it. I believe in strong family cows and that’s what the Dale Hostetter, right, and his sons, Alan and Ernie, on the halter, claimed the reserve grand championship. Presenting the trophy was Kirby Horst. Deck hopes to build on the Jackie family with her Tradition embryos that are due in December and the Mars Tony calf she is carrying. “I plan to build the genetics for the future with her.” He bought this 4-year-old winner at last year’s All-American Sale in Harrisburg. Classified at VG-88, Jackie finished her first lactation with 22,800 pounds of milk and a 4.0 percent test. In her current lac tation she will exceed her projection of 24,000 pounds of milk. She is also a sixth generation show winner. Dale Hostetter and sons, Ann ville, garnered the reserve position with their 3-year-old, Dale-Pride Specs Paula VG-86, that is homebred on both sides of her pedigree. Her sire, Dale-Pride Specs, is classified VG-87. Her dam, Dale-Pride Matt Peggy, is classified VG-85. As a 2-year-old, Paula finished her lactation with 18,000 pounds of milk. The Hostetlers first started showing at the Fair when their son Ernie began showing with the NoSoAnn 4-H club 21 years ago. While they have claimed the championship rosetter before, this was the first major win for Paula. Lynn Miller, Towanda, judge for the show, noted proper teat placement, snug fore udder attachment, and milkiness. In the Junior animal division, Stephanie Wagner, Myerstown, repeated her performance from the 4-H show and won the junior championship. Inspite of the earlier win, Friday’s title still surprised Wagner, “I didn’t think I would win because there is always stiffer competition in the open show,” she explained. Her parents, Vincent and Juliet Wagner, bred the champion Ju- Vindale Tradition Bobbie. The senior yearling heifer, a Tradition daughter, is out of an EX-90 dam, Ju-Vindale Butch Hoe Bonnie. Veteran showman Nelson Bomgardner, in his last year as a 4-H’er, stepped into the reserve slot with Loving-Meadows Trin cola. This junior yearling is out of Walkerbrae Ambassador and Bomgardner’s first 4-H project. “The dam is an excellent brood cow,” he noted.
