Heagy,
BY JACK HUBLEY
LEBANON Former Penn State
swine specialist Matt Parsons
came down from Massachusetts
this week and found Pennsylvania
pork to be in good trim. Parsons,
who currently runs a swine con
sulting business and came south to
judge the Lebanon Fair’s market
hog show on Monday, remarked
that the show was characterized by
good quality pigs all the way
through.
One pig that caught his eye,
though, was a Duroc-Yorkshire gilt
shown by Shelby Heagy of
Lebanon. “She did the best job of
combining muscling, leanness and
volume,” said Parsons. The show’s
grand champion was bred by Miss
Heagy’s grandfather, Leon Arnold,
a well-known Lebanon breeder.
Sired by the “Extra” boar owned
A Poland China-Duroc cross shown by Daryl Grumbine took
reserve honors.

by Leon’s brother, Larry, the top

division champion at 240 pounds.
Miss Heagy also had the show’s
lightweight champion, sired by the
same boar. The daughter of Pat
Heagy, Shelby is in seventh grade
at Cedar Crest Middle School.
Although she has shown cham
pions at the county roundup, this
was her first grand champion at
the county fair.
She exhibits both beef and swine,
but prefers swine in the showring.
“They’re easier to train,” she
sajrs. Another one of her grand
father’s pigs placed third in car
cass competition.
At reserve was a 230-pound gilt
