The alternate dairy princess title went to Jennifer Shields. Jennifer is the daughter of James and Cathy Shields, R.D. 1 Summerville. Jennifer received a banner and flowers along with a cash award. Lydia, a 1986 graduate of the Punxsutawney Area High School, is the daughter of Richard and Judy Reed, Punxsutawney. Lydia enjoys helping on her family’s Holstein dairy farm. She is ac tively involved in the county’s 4-H program, dairy ambassadors and her church choir. Jennifer will be a senior at the Brookville Area High School in September, where she will resume a busy schedule. Jennifer is active in her high school band, show choir, German club, and national honor society. Jennifer is also a member of the Pennsylvania Youth Education Association as well as on the school’s newspaper staff. Jennifer’s family milks a combination of 25 Jeisey and Holstein cows. Jefferson County agriculture agent Susan McCaslin was the coordinator for the event. Judges were Elaine Chamberlain, Eloise Pifer and Bill Screckengost. The dairy ambassadors are a select group of volunteer high school boys and girls from each of the school districts in Jefferson County. Under the direction of the Jefferson County Penn State Cooperative Extension Staff, the ambassadors carry the dairy message to schools and other community organizations in Jefferson County. The dairy ambassadors work with the reigning dairy princess. Both help advertise the benefits of milk and milk by-products. During her reign Lydia will travel throughout the county promoting milk and dairy products.
