Dad. And deserving of a bit of special recognition are those dads who successfully manage what has to be a sometimes difficult balancing act. It involves commitment, courage, a sense of fairness, tact, and at times plenty of humor. 4t These are fathers who farm with their children. (Or, for that matter, involved in any successful business situations with their off spring.) An article I read some time ago in the Farm Credit magazine in cluded an extremely negative quote from an obviously disgruntled son who had tried farming with his dad. “There ought to be a law against relatives farming together. A lot of things are said and done in a family partnership that wouldn’t be said or done in a regular business relationship.” Families farm together for many reasons: sons or daughters return home because of parents’ health problems they farm because they don’t know what else to do the farm in hopes of eventually taking over if they can stick it out long enough. But mostly they return home to join the farm because of one simple reason: they absolutely love farming and don’t ever want to do anything else. Because of the closeness of the personalities involved, father-son fanning is rarely something that meshes perfectly. In fact, I’d guess it’s a lot like marriage plenty of give and take, and keeping your mouth shut when you’d rather open it and scream things you’d surely regret plenty later on. After all, dad is still the parent and son (or daughter) the child, even when the “child” is several decades old and has his own growing family of youngsters. And sometimes, parents find it well nigh impossible to hand over control, decisions, problem- UNCUMNISf 'IHCHTCOi A & B SALES & SERVICE 2 Milo South of Rt 23 Ak>n( 772 Thru Monterey RO 1 Ronks. Finances may rear an ugly head. A son may have to struggle to get by in today’s inflated economy on what to dad was once a decent monthly salary. Or, a son may make sweeping changes not in the long-term best interest of a farm business. From talking with successful family partnership members, it’s communications that make the most critical difference. Successful father-son farm partners are able to talk, I mean REALLY talk, with each other. Fathers are willing to hear out sons’ thoughts, suggestions, problems, needs. And sons respect father’s experience, knowledge, advice and accomplishments in the ag industry. Plus, a successful father-son farm partnership usually goes beyond just those individuals. In laws in such operations are also interested, understanding, and most of all, perhaps - broad minded. We have long admired those farm families of our acquaintance who work together so well in operating a family partnership. Some have three or four children, each seeming to have found their own niche in the operation. One son may have a knack for the cows or livestock, another the crop work, and maybe another the machinery management. Dad is confident enough of the children’s abilities to share decision making and be a partner not a dictator. I suppose it is part of Dad’s dream here that the kids may someday be interested in con tinuing what we have begun. If that ever occurs, I pray we may be given the wisdom, the com munication skills and the sense of humor to do our part and more to make it work. And to all you fathers who have already done so, you have our respect, admiration and special congratulations on this Father’s Dr GAP POWER EQUIPMENT Corner of Rt 301 Rt >97 Gap.
