Dl2-Lancaster Farming Saturday, June 14,1986 License Fee Increase for Fruit, Vegetable Traders Proposed WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed a $36 increase in the basic, annual license fee required for fruit and vegetable traders to operate in the produce industry under provisions of the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act. Joseph A. Gribbin, an official with USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, said the in crease is needed to assure that services to the produce industry are maintained through fiscal year 1989. Fees paid by licensees cover most of the cost of administering the program. The proposed fee schedule would require a firm licensed under Vegetable Growers Slate Field Day UNIVERSITY PARK - The Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers’ Association will co-sponsor a Vegetable Field Day with Penn State’s Department of Horticulture and the College of Agriculture on Monday, July 21, at the Hor ticulture Research Farm, Route 45, Rock Springs. The field day will feature variety trials of specialty and gourmet crops; use of row covers and tunnels for the production of sweet corn, romaine lettuce and cauliflower; tillage and planting methods for cabbage and snap beans; demonstrations on the effects of soil compaction on the growth and yield of several vegetables; nutrition and fertility studies with pepper, broccoli, melons, and beets; and weed control studies in pepper, carrot and pumpkin. In addition, insect and disease research plots will also be viewed during the day. There will be a display of planters for seeding vegetables, especially gel seeding.
