No-till plantings of small grains and alfalfa have been extremely successful, ac cording to Joel Myers of the Soil Conservation Service in Dauphin County. Myers explained that advice and assistance is being provided by SCS to individuals desiring to plant no-till crops. Currently no-till drills are being coordinated for soybean planting throughout Dauphin County. Myers indicated that his ex perience with soybeans has been very successful when planting in residue. Especially under current dry conditions no-till offers three advantages: 1. Crusting usually associated with con ventional tillage under dry con ditions can be eliminated. 3. A reduction in labor and time required for planting can be significant. At the present time, in spite of dry, hard soil conditions, no-till drills have been able to penetrate the soil and get to adequate planting depth, Myers stated. In fact, in many cases with good residue cover, bean seed has been planted to a depth where some moisture was available.
