How much water do you think you use for cooking and drinking each day? A. 2 to 3 gallons, B. 5 to 7 gallons, or C. 10 to 15 gallons. Most of us are aware that water plays an important role in our everyday activities. But how many of us know the total amount of water we use and where it is used in the home? Studies of household water use have found that each person uses somewhere between 60 to 80 gallons daily. This does not include water used outside the home for lawn and garden watering or other purposes. In larger-size households and in those having higher incomes, individual water use tends to be greater. Where is water used in the home? Almost 75 percent of total household water consumption occurs in the bathroom. Every day the average person uses 25 gallons for toilet flushing and 22 gallons in the shower, bath and bathroom sink. Water for cleaning purposes, such as dishwashing, laundry and housecleaning, amounts to about 14 gallons per individual each day. As far as water for cooking and drinking, you were right if you choose Answer A above. A typical person uses about three gallons of water in preparing food and for drinking each day. Most people believe we use a larger amount. Of the total quantity of water each of us uses every day, we drink a very small amount - about 1 to 2 percent. Yet the acceptability of water for drinking purposes is Lancaster Co, 4-H Production Club The Lancaster County 4-H Shawn Eberly, scrap book people. By Doris Thomas Lancaster Extension Home Economist usually foremost in our minds when we think about the water flowing from the taps in our homes. This concern is probably the result of our knowledge of connections between water and human health. Water-related human health problems fall into three main types. The first category includes the traditional waterborne diseases, such as typhoid and cholera. As a result of the use of modern water treatment methods, including disinfection by chlorinating water, these diseases have been all but eliminated in the United States. Intestinal distresses resulting from drinking water containing biological or chemical agents is a second major type of waterborne human health threat. About 9,000 cases of such illnesses are reported in the nation each year, although the actual number occuring is believed to be much higher. Pennsylvania is one of the states which accounts for a relatively high proportion of the total number of outbreaks and illnesses. Over the last decade, an average of about 1,300 water-related illnesses have been documented in the state each year. Third, there are concerns about the long-run consequences for human health of consuming very small amounts of potentially toxic chemical substances existing in some water supplies. Our ability to detect these contaminants has greatly expanded. However, we often know very little about the long-run impact on our health and thus the risk which these sub stances pose.
