Tests Reveal
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S.
Department of Agriculture today
reported that testing of school
lunch ground beef for heptachlor
residues show that none of the 222
samples contained illegal levels of
the pesticide. As a result, USDA is
releasing all ground beef products
placed on hold in late March when
the testing began.
USDA initiated the.testing of
school-lunch ground beef and some
commercial beef products after
the Food and Drug Administration
discovered heptachlor in milk
from dairy herds in Arkansas,
Missouri and Oklahoma.
“The results indicate that
consumers need not be concerned
that meat products destined for
use in the National School Lunch
Program are contaminated,” said
Donald L. Houston, administrator
of USDA’s Food Safety and In
spection Service.
On March 25, USDA placed a
hold on ground beef processed for
the school lunch program by five

animals or raw meat from the
affected area. The holding and
testing of products from these
plants was initiated as a
precautionary measure; USDA
had no direct evidence that
products from the plants were
contaminated.
According to Houston, the
testing of commercial meat and
poultry products for heptachlor is
continuing. A sampling program to
monitor beef, hogs, sheep and
poultry for heptachlor residues in
slaughter plants in Missouri,
Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kansas
will continue at least through May.

Results to date have identified 14
out of 625 meat samples that
contained violative levels of
heptachlor.
“Since our testing has been
targeted at school lunch and
commercial meat products likely
to have come from the con
taminated area, the results in
dicate there is no widespread
contamination of the meat sup
ply,” said Houston.
USDA has initiated procedures
for assuring that animals from
herds identified as being con
taminated with heptachlor do not
reach market channels.
