BRICKERVILLE - The Lan
caster County Conservation
District honored area farmers as
well as some of its own outgoing
board members at the
organization’s 35th annual dinner
meeting held at the Brickerville
Fire Hall on Mar. 21.
Highlighting the evening was the
introduction of the district’s
Outstanding Cooperator, James G.
Kreider, of Shady Birch Farm,
East Drumore Township. Kreider,
who farms a total of 400 acres in
partnership with his son, Tom, has
installed an extensive system of
terraces, waterways and tile
drainage since signing with the
Lancaster District in 1966. (The
Kreider operation was featured in
the Mar. 15 issue of Lancaster

conservation tillage practices.
Receiving no-till awards were
Christian Smucker of Caenarvon
Township and Martin Greenleaf
Jr., of Colerain Township.
During 1985, Smucker converted
his entire farm to contour farming
and no-till com planting. He has
also installed nearly 2,000 feet of
pipe outlet terraces, 1,400 feet of
waterways, and has installed a
manure storage structure.
Greenleaf applies no-till prac
tices to his entire 800 acres of
cropland, and has installed more
than half a mile of terraces. He
was recently named the top
southeastern Pennsylvania farmer
over 30 by the state Young Far
mer’s Association.
