Highlighting the evening was the introduction of the district’s Outstanding Cooperator, James G. Kreider, of Shady Birch Farm, East Drumore Township. Kreider, who farms a total of 400 acres in partnership with his son, Tom, has installed an extensive system of terraces, waterways and tile drainage since signing with the Lancaster District in 1966. (The Kreider operation was featured in the Mar. 15 issue of Lancaster Fanning.) Receiving no-till awards were Christian Smucker of Caenarvon Township and Martin Greenleaf Jr., of Colerain Township. During 1985, Smucker converted his entire farm to contour farming and no-till com planting. He has also installed nearly 2,000 feet of pipe outlet terraces, 1,400 feet of waterways, and has installed a manure storage structure. Greenleaf applies no-till prac tices to his entire 800 acres of cropland, and has installed more than half a mile of terraces. He was recently named the top southeastern Pennsylvania farmer over 30 by the state Young Far mer’s Association. J Everett Kreider was recognized for 20 years of service, and Robert K. Mowrer was honored for his 18 years as a director. Each year the Lancaster District, along with the Federated Sportsmen of Lancaster County, sponsors a week-long Youth Conservation School for students 14 to 16 years old. The school is staffed by two directors and 12 counselors, who provide ap proximately 30 students with hands-on training m a variety of conservation topics. Two coun selors were cited for outstanding service to the school during the Friday night dinner. Lowell Graybill of Bowmansville has served as a counselor since 1980, and Tracy McCoy has been with the school since its inception in 1979. Last year both counselors were promoted to newly created positions as assistant directors. Also honored at the dinner was Soil Conservation Service retiree, George H. Rohrer, who recently retired from SCS with 33 years of service. Goat seminar LEES PORT A goat seminar is scheduled for April 19 at the Berks County Agricultural Center. This seminar will focus on water quality, external parasites and mastitis. Goat owners face many problems managing their animals. Mastitis and external parasites annually cause serious concerns to goatherders. Many do not un derstand these problems, do not recognize them, and have dif ficulty preventing and treating them. Dr. Mary Smith, Assistant Professor, Cornell University, and a world renowned expert on goats, will speak on this subject. The cost of the seminar is $6.00 without lunch and $lO.OO with lunch.
